This Ain’t The NFL (1984 Preview)
by: Jacob Karlstein, from the fanzine “DC Connection”
The USFL gambled with some of their franchises that certain fan bases hope for football year round. For many, the jury is still out. Certainly, in places like Chicago where the Blitz won the championship, or New York/New Jersey, where they have Herschel Walker, the fans will show up. What about here in the nation’s capital?
Fans supported the Federals ins spite of a losing season and a third place finish in their division. However, the Washington NFL team is red hot right now, winning division titles year after year. It’s only a matter of time before they win a Super Bowl. The fans love them no matter what, but this town knows how to support a champion.
If the Federals continue to flounder, will the fans continue to show up? Once again, I think the die hards are here no matter what. But, the casual fan needs to find this league and find a reason to support it. The USFL promises more offense. Will that be enough? Once again, I can’t wait to find out.
Is There Room Enough for Both of Them? (1983 Preview)
by: Jacob Karlstein, from the fanzine “DC Connection” (excerpt)
The USFL, the new professional football league that debuts in the spring (yes, you read that right), established teams in several already established NFL cities. While that makes sense to try to build your brand from an already known product, I have questions.
Namely, can the District of Columbia maintain support for two football teams? Granted, the support for the NFL team is fervent and will spill over into the Federals. But, sports more and more need to reach out to find a more casual fan base.
Will the non die hard football fans show up for the USFL? Maybe in the beginning, when the league is new and fresh. But, how will the Federals keep those fans around if the product on the field isn’t worth watching? I, for one, can’t wait to see the answer.
