1985 Preview: Pittsburgh Maulers Poised for Breakthrough Season
By Shawn Lucas, Pittsburgh Gazette
After a challenging inaugural season, the Pittsburgh Maulers are ready to shake off the growing pains and make a strong push in the 1985 USFL season. Under the guidance of head coach Ellis Rainsburg, the team has addressed key issues and looks to capitalize on the promising talent that emerged last year. With new additions and a renewed focus on execution, the Maulers are determined to prove they belong among the league’s elite.
Quarterback Stability
The quarterback position will be crucial for the Maulers in 1985. Glenn Carano, who struggled with consistency last season, has shown significant improvement during the offseason. His familiarity with the offensive system and increased chemistry with the receiving corps should lead to a more efficient passing attack. Backup Tom Rozantz provides a reliable safety net, ensuring depth at the position.
Offensive Firepower
Running back Mike Rozier is the centerpiece of Pittsburgh’s offense. Despite a challenging rookie season, Rozier displayed flashes of brilliance, finishing with 1,025 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns. With an improved offensive line, anchored by center Joe Burke and tackles Mark McClearn and Bill Maggs, Rozier is poised for a breakout year. Complementing Rozier in the backfield, Jerry Holman and Sam Miller provide versatile options to keep defenses guessing.
Wide receiver Greg Anderson emerged as a reliable target, leading the team with 1,187 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns. His speed and route-running ability make him a constant deep threat. Jackie Flowers adds a dynamic element with his ability to make plays after the catch. Tight end Mark Raugh, known for his blocking prowess, is also expected to contribute significantly in the passing game.
Defensive Improvements
The Maulers’ defense showed potential but struggled with consistency. This year, defensive coordinator Jim Young has focused on tightening up the unit. Defensive end Sam Clancy, who led the team with 5 sacks, returns to spearhead the pass rush. Linebackers Ron Crosby and Ron Freeman are tasked with anchoring the middle of the defense, bringing physicality and leadership.
In the secondary, safety Jeff Delaney and cornerback Jerry Holmes are expected to create turnovers and provide stability. With improved communication and a year of experience under their belts, the defense aims to be more cohesive and resilient.
Special Teams and Intangibles
Special teams play often makes the difference in close games, and kicker Tony Lee returns to provide consistency. Punter John Swider, who averaged 42.2 yards per punt, will be crucial in winning the field position battle.
Off the field, Coach Rainsburg has instilled a sense of unity and purpose in the team. The players are motivated and hungry to prove themselves after last year’s 5-13 record. With a more favorable schedule and a year of experience, the Maulers are set to turn the corner.
Key Games to Watch
The Maulers’ season opener against the Oklahoma Outlaws will set the tone for the year. A strong performance could build early momentum. Midseason matchups against division rivals Michigan Panthers and Philadelphia Stars will be critical in determining playoff positioning.
Outlook
While the Maulers are still a young team, the foundation laid last season provides a solid base for growth. If the offense can find its rhythm and the defense can tighten up, Pittsburgh has the potential to be a surprise contender. The road to success won’t be easy, but the Maulers are ready to face the challenges head-on and bring exciting football to the Steel City.
