Philadelphia Stars 1985 Season Preview: Aiming for Redemption

Philadelphia, PA – After an impressive 16-2 regular season in 1984 that ended with a heartbreaking first-round playoff loss, the Philadelphia Stars are back and more determined than ever. With a core of returning talent and a few new faces, Coach Jim Mora’s squad is focused on turning last year’s disappointment into this year’s triumph.

Quarterbacks

Leading the charge once again will be Chuck Fusina, who had a stellar 1984 season with 3,822 passing yards and 36 touchdowns. His command of the offense and ability to stay cool under pressure will be pivotal. Backing him up is Tom Riordan, who showed promise in limited action last year.

Running Backs

The backfield remains a strength for the Stars. Kelvin Bryant, who rushed for 1,481 yards and 16 touchdowns, will continue to be the workhorse. Alan Harvin and David Riley provide depth and versatility, capable of breaking big plays both on the ground and through the air.

Wide Receivers and Tight Ends

The receiving corps is anchored by Scott Fitzkee and Willie Collier. Fitzkee led the team with 825 yards and 12 touchdowns, while Collier’s 1,092 yards and 10 touchdowns make him a dangerous deep threat. Tight ends Steve Folsom and Mark Donovan are reliable targets over the middle, combining for over 1,200 yards last season.

Offensive Line

Protecting Fusina and paving the way for the running game is a formidable offensive line. With Bart Oates at center and key contributions from Chuck Commiskey and George Gilbert, this unit is both experienced and cohesive.

Defensive Line and Linebackers

On defense, the Stars are led by the tenacious front seven. Defensive end William Fuller and linebacker Sam Mills are the stars here, combining for numerous sacks and disruptions. Mills, in particular, is a tackling machine and the heart of the defense.

Secondary

The secondary boasts playmakers like cornerbacks Jonathan Lane and Jonathan Sutton, who combined for 16 interceptions last season. Safety Mike Lush, with his ability to read the game and make crucial plays, adds another layer of security.

Special Teams

Kicker David Trout and punter Sean Landetta anchor the special teams unit. Trout’s reliability from long range and Landetta’s ability to pin opponents deep will be critical in close games.

New Additions

The Stars have made some strategic additions in the off-season, focusing on bolstering their defensive depth and special teams. These new faces are expected to contribute immediately and provide the team with the depth needed for a long playoff run.

Season Outlook

The Philadelphia Stars enter the 1985 season with high expectations. The bitter taste of last year’s early playoff exit has only fueled their desire for redemption. With a potent offense, a stingy defense, and top-notch special teams, the Stars are primed for another championship run.

Philadelphia fans, gear up for what promises to be an electrifying season. The Stars are ready to shine brighter than ever in 1985, and their journey to reclaiming the championship begins now.
