Back to the Drawing Board? (1984 Preview)
by: Anna Elaine, The Philadelphia Inquirer (excerpt)
Last year, I wrote that the Stars aligned here in Philadelphia. Last season proved me wrong. The USFL team here in Philadelphia managed to only go 8-10 and finish second to the Boston Breakers in the east division. Where some predicted a USFL Championship berth, the Stars delivered only mediocrity and disappointment.
It all looked good on paper. The Stars boasted some big name talent from the NFL and a supporting cast of characters besides. But, they don’t play the games on paper. And, so, we wait another year to see if the potential that they have gets realized on the field.
I, for one, continue to have faith that they will. There’s just too much talent on both sides of the ball for them to falter again this year. If they do, I fear that the front office might blow things up and that’s never good. Far too often do those five year plans become 10 year plans. So, while I hate to deliver an ultimatum after only one year, success or bust looks to be the slogan here in Philly for the Stars.
The Stars Align in Philly (1983 Preview)

Have you heard of this new spring football league? The USFL? From what I gather, they intend to try to field a product on par with the more established National Football League. Here in Phiadelphia, at least, that looks to be more than an empty promise.
They hired Jim Mora to coach. Chuck Fusina and Kelvin Bryant lead the offense as quarterback and linebacker Sam Mills is set to do the same on a formidable defense. While some of the other players are not household names, give them time. It may not be long until your kids are asking for a Fitzkee or Collier jersey.
The team is stacked and ready to dominate the USFL for the foreseeable future. Of course, nothing is set in stone until they get out on the field, but this team seems like one of the most sure bets (metaphorically, of course) of the last decade in this city. Besides, it’s been a few years since we were able to be excited about football in Philadelphia.
