Invaders to Fans: Thank You! (1984 Preview)
by: Kirk Lucus, Associated Press (excerpt)
Football fans in Oakland rejoiced upon hearing the new of a team coming to their part of the Bay Area. Al Davis’ constant feud with the NFL that causes him to threaten and ultimately move the team to Los Angeles leaves Oakland fans constantly on edge. The USFL promised, and delivered on that promise in a big way, in Boston by allowing them to form a cooperative to buy the team this year.
Invaders fans are happy to have that option in their repetoire. Ownership showed no indication of selling this team. However, sports are a business and anything can happen. The main reason fans want this team to say is they went to the Championship in the inaugural USFL season. Nothing indicates that they can’t make another run for the championship next year.
So, no matter what Al Davis decides to do in the future, football is here to stay in Oakland. Enjoy the experience and be prepared to maybe come to the rescue if the business gets ugly.
Oakland to USFL: Thank You! (1983 Preview)

When the USFL announced Oakland as one of its inaugural franchises, football fans in The Bay Area all breathed a huge sigh of relief. As Al Davis plays pattycake with the NFL and the city of Los Angeles (with ever persistent rumors of maybe even Las Vegas?!), the USFL swooped in and grabbed the hearts of those otherwise heartbroken fans.
Plus, and count me just as surprised as the next fan, this team could be almost on par with the Raiders. I know what you’re thinking. And, you’d be right. No team in the first year of existence will match the history and pageantry of the Black and Silver. But, hear me out. The team looks damn good on paper.
Let Al Davis continue his circus with Pete Rozelle and the NFL. At least for the next few months, we have the Invaders. Plus, not for nothing, but Invaders even rhymes with Raiders.
