Herschel Needs Help! (1984 Preview)
by: Oscar Vasco, New Jersey Star-Ledger (excerpt)
Reigning offensive MVP Herschel Walker did what he could for the New Jersey Generals. Unfortunately, the team limped into the offseason with a 5-13 record and a last place finish in the East division. Fortunately, the team realized that Herschel can’t do it alone. My dad used to say, “One man a team does not make.”
They brought in Brian Sipe at quarterback and promised to utilize Maurice Carthon more in the offense. They improved the offensive line. Some accuese the Generals and other teams of starting an arms race and going against the spirit of the league. A valid compaint, but given the success of the league last year and excitement coming into this year, I forgive them for their indiscretions. You have to spend money to make money, right?
So, at the risk of getting snake bitten again, I go into the season with the same excitement as last year. This year, though, I think I have reason to be. Anything less than a playoff berth and possible championship gets us one year closer to being the laughing stock of the league. Here’s hoping that Coach Walt Michaels has a few tricks up his sleeve to keep that from happening.
There Goes Herschel! (1983 Preview)

The USFL starts in only a couple of weeks. Some derided the league as a non-starter or, at best, a younger brother to the NFL. Your hometown Generals just proved that neither of those things is true. They put the NFL on notice by nabbing University of Georgia running back Herschel Walker and signing him to play professional football earlier than he could have with the NFL.
Some mock the move as a publicity stunt and say that it diminishes the competitive spirit of college football. I write them off as the same “sky is falling” group that always crawls out of the woodwork to cry against progress. The Generals showed that they will not play second fiddle to the city teams (that play here in Jersey) and that the USFL will not defer to the more established NFL.
Bring on the season.
There goes Herschel!
