Unfinished Business (1984 Preview)

Helena Gordon, Detroit Free Press

My esteemed colleague Sylvio Gaylord wrote last year that anything short of a USFL Championship Game appearance is a disappointment. Well, guess what? Color Michigan Panthers fans disappointed. In spite of an 18-0 regular season record, the Panthers saw their dreams shattered in the first round of the playoffs by division rival Chicago.

The Blitz lived up to their name, sacking Michigan quarterback Bobby Hebert 11 times in the game and scoring two 4th quarter touchdowns to defeat the Panthers. The Blitz then defeated Oakland in the championship game. Nobody expects a repeat of the regular season performance. Only one other team went undefeated in the history of professional football.

However, nothing says they can’t make the playoffs again. As both Oakland and Chicago showed, that’s the first step. From there, if you get hot at the right time, you can bring home that championship. I assure you, these Panthers are hungry to do just that.

USFL Championship or Bust (1983 Preview)

by: Sylvio Gaylord, Associated Press (excerpted)

Football fans in Detroit found little to cheer for in the Lions last year. In the strike shortened season, they came in 4th place in the division with a 4-5 record. In spite of that record, they went on to the playoffs, where they lost 31-7 to Washington.

[So], They can be forgiven for putting what some consider to be too much faith in the new spring football league debuting this year. If we’re being honest, though, they may have reason. On offense, with Hebert at quarterback, Ken Lacy at tailback, and Holloway and Carter at wide receiver, they could contend as the top scoring team in the league.

In addition, the defense looks solid in all three aspects; line, linebackers, and secondary. As long as they can hold opponents under 20 points, then the offense will put points on the board. The only thing standing in their way is a tough Central division. But I, for one, agree with their fans. Anything short of a USFL Championship Game appearance is a disappointment.
