**A Championship Mindset: An Interview with Jack Pardee, Head Coach of the Houston Gamblers**

*By Sarah J. Thompson*

As the Houston Gamblers prepare for their sophomore season in the USFL, excitement and anticipation are at an all-time high. The team achieved what many thought impossible by winning 14 regular-season games and capturing the USFL Championship in their debut season. I had the opportunity to sit down with head coach Jack

Pardee to discuss the incredible first season and his outlook for the 1985 season.

**Sarah J. Thompson (SJT):** Coach Pardee, congratulations on an incredible inaugural season. Winning the championship in your first year must have been an amazing experience. What were some of the keys to your success?

**Jack Pardee (JP):** Thank you, Sarah. It was indeed an unforgettable season. The keys to our success were a combination of factors. First and foremost, we had an exceptionally talented group of players who bought into our system from day one. Jim Kelly’s leadership at quarterback was pivotal, and our defense made crucial plays when it mattered most. We also had a fantastic coaching staff that worked tirelessly to prepare the team each week.

**SJT:** Jim Kelly had a phenomenal season, throwing for over 5,700 yards and 55 touchdowns. How important was his performance to the team’s success?

**JP:** Jim was absolutely crucial to our success. His ability to read defenses, make quick decisions, and deliver accurate throws under pressure made him a nightmare for opposing defenses. Beyond his physical talents, his leadership and work ethic set the tone for the entire team. He has a bright future ahead of him, and we’re lucky to have him leading our offense.

**SJT:** The Gamblers had a potent offense, but your defense also played a significant role, particularly in forcing turnovers. Can you talk about the defensive strategy and any standout players?

**JP:** Our defense was all about being aggressive and opportunistic. We emphasized creating turnovers and making big plays. Will Lewis was outstanding in the secondary, leading the team with 16 interceptions. Our pass rushers, including Pete Catan and Tony Fitzpatrick, consistently pressured opposing quarterbacks, which helped force those turnovers. The entire unit played with a lot of heart and determination.

**SJT:** Looking ahead to the 1985 season, what are your goals and expectations for the team?

**JP:** Our primary goal is to defend our championship and continue to build on last year’s success. We know we have a target on our backs now, so we need to stay focused and not become complacent. Every team in the league will be gunning for us, and we need to be ready for that challenge. We also want to continue developing our younger players and improve in areas where we saw weaknesses last year.

**SJT:** Are there any new additions to the team or changes in your strategy that fans should be excited about?

**JP:** We’ve made a few strategic additions to bolster our depth, particularly on the offensive and defensive lines. We believe that games are won in the trenches, and having a strong line on both sides of the ball is crucial. We’re also looking to diversify our offensive playbook a bit more to keep defenses guessing. Our fans can expect to see some new wrinkles this season.

**SJT:** Finally, Coach, what message do you have for the Houston Gamblers’ fans as you prepare for the new season?

**JP:** I want to thank our fans for their incredible support last season. You were a huge part of our success, and we can’t wait to get back out there and play in front of you again. This year, we aim to give you even more to cheer about. Stay loud, stay proud, and let’s go defend our title!

**SJT:** Thank you for your time, Coach Pardee. Best of luck in the upcoming season.

**JP:** Thank you, Sarah. It’s going to be an exciting year.

As the Houston Gamblers gear up for another season, Coach Pardee’s leadership and the team’s determination to defend their championship title promise an exciting journey ahead. With a blend of seasoned talent and strategic additions, the Gamblers are poised to make another deep run in the USFL. Fans can look forward to a thrilling season of football as the team aims to build on their historic success.
