Fool’s Gold? (1984 Preview)

by: Delilah Jason, Denver Post (Excerpt)

Denver fans had something to celebrate in the inagural USFL season. Unfortunately, no, it wasn’t the Gold. The hometown team went 8-10 last year and hovered around .500 all year. Granted, the record was good enough for second place in the weak west division. Unfortunately, with only 4 teams slated for the playoffs, the Gold found themselves on the outside looking in.

Fans, however, got to experience playoff football. Denver hosted the first ever USFL championship. In that game, Chicago faced a Michigan team trying to finish off an undefeated season. In a thrilling defensive battle, Chicago defeated the Panthers, ruined their season, and won the championship.

But, this article is about the Gold and their chances in the upcoming season. They added some players. However, both Oakland and Los Angeles also looked to get stronger. We can hope here in the Mile High City. But, from up here, it looks like another third place finish and on the outside looking in for the hometown team. I hope they prove me wrong.

Denver Strikes Gold (1983 Preview)

by: Delilah Jason, Denver Post (Excerpt)

John Elway and Dan Reeves have some competition this year. And, as the saying goes, it’s coming from inside the house! The Denver Gold start play in the USFL, a spring football league set to kick off in March.

The league comes about as the brainchild of David Dixon, a New Orleans Businessman. He received financial and television backing from NBC and ESPN. So, the promise of near NFL talent at a discount price has some merit.

Fans, at least, express curiosity about the league. Will it simply be a farm system for the NFL? Is there enough interest to watch football year round? The NFL repeatedly draws millions of fans to the stadium and on television every year. Will they give this new league a chance? Or, will they simply watch from the sidelines with morbid fascination as the league flounders and fails in a few short years.

Only time will tell.
