Ladies and Gentlemen, Your USFL Champion Chicago Blitz (1984 Preview)

by: Ron Balon from the fanzine “Bear Market” (Letter to the Editor)

Yours truly must eat my words. At the beginning of last season, I went on a rant about how the USFL ain’t the NFL and the Chicago Blitz ain’t the Bears. Well, I’m here to say that both of those things are very true, but not in the way I expected. The Blitz nearly kept pace with the only undefeated team, their division rival Michigan Panthers.

That record put them in the playoffs. After a win against Boston in the playoffs, they got a rematch against those very Panthers. Their defense, good all year, got even better in the playoffs. They recorded 11 sacks, gave up only 23 total points in the two games, and brought home the inaugural USFL championship. I’m man enough to admit when I’m wrong.

There’s no reason they can’t do the same next year and maybe even the year after that. This team is built for the long haul. With our Bears, we have so much to celebrate in this sport. I wasn’t ready to love the Blitz like the Bears after only one year, but what can I say? Winning changes a man.

They Ain’t the Bears (1983 Preview)

By now, you’ve no doubt heard about the new spring football league the USFL. You probably also read or heard that they put a team in our city. Well, I’m here to state the obvious.

They ain’t the Bears. They ain’t the Bears. They ain’t ever gonna be the Bears. The Bears have a long and storied history in this city. George Halas coached them. They won 8 NFL Championship before the Super Bowl era. It’s not just about the past, either.

This current Bears team looks poised to make a run at a possible championship soon. Ditka was a hell of a player for them and he looks to be a hell of a coach, too. Once Ryan figures out this defense, watch out.

So, we don’t have to love and care about the Blitz like the Bears. I, for one, won’t. But, I will watch and pay attention. Because it’s football when we don’t usually get to watch football.
