Boston Fans to USFL, “We Warned You.” (1984 Preview)

by: Patrick Sullivan, Boston Globe (Excerpt)

Last year, at the beginning of the season, I wrote about the heartbreak that Boston fans felt when their teams moved (or were rumored to move) to other cities. A dedicated group of fans to the new USFL team vowed that never happens to the Breakers. True to their word, when rumors started in the offseason that ownership planned to move to New Orleans, they executed a plan to ensure that move never took place.

The league, obviously, doubted their commitment and ability to achieve this goal. The schedule reflects that. The Breakers schedule reflects a move to New Orleans. So, they play their divisional games against the teams from the south. A bit of a mess to be fair, but better than the alternative. And, the league must build a proper schedul for the team next year.

Because the fans took over the ownership of the team. They pooled their resources and made the Breakers a fan owned co-op similar to the NFL’s Green Bay Packers. As long as the USFL exists, the Boston Breakers will be a part of it. All thanks to the fans in one of the greatest sports cities in the world.

Boston Fans to USFL, “This is our team!” (1983 Preview)

Thankfully, the USFL chose to give Boston a team. Unfortunately, sports leagues are littered with teams leaving for greener pastures. Here in Boston, we lost the Braves in 1953 to Milwaukee and then eventually Atlanta. Rumors abound that the Whalers might leave Hartford while there is no guarantee that the Patriots stay here, either.

Well, fans of the new USFL team in Boston, the Breakers, have said to the league that they are willing to go to possibly extreme circumstances to keep the team in Boston. Because the league promises “Fiscal responsibility” in an attempt to stay afloat during a probably rocky first few years, the fans floated an idea to pool their money and buy the team similar to the group ownership of the NFL’s Green Bay Packers.

It represents a bold move by the fans to try to take back some control from what they view as greedy owners and players. USFL, you have been warned. “This is our team.”
