What Do They Do as an Encore? (1984 Preview)

by: Theo Yemina, Birmingham Times (Excerpt)

Professional football in Alabama did not disappoint last year. After starting the year 2-4, our Stallions won 6 in a row and 8 of their last 12 in order to finish at 10-8. That record put them in third place in the strong Central division. However, that record was good enough for 5th place in the whole league.

With expansion comes a slight realignment of the league. Birmingham and Tampa Bay move to the new South division with expansion teams Memphis and Jacksonville. Anything can happen, but if they continue their strong play from the end of last season, they can certainly take one of the top two positions in the South and make it into the playoffs.

There’s no indication that can’t happen. Bringing in players like Cliff Stoudt at quarterback and Joe Cribbs at running back strengthen the offense. Pair that with an already good defense all but guarantees success for the 1984 seasons. I know about counting chickens before they hatch, but they have the opportunity to do good things this year.

Professional Football in Alabama (1983 Preview)

Thank God for the USFL. The new spring football league brings professional sports to areas often ignored by the other professional leagues. Now fans need to show them that their faith isn’t misguided.

While we appreciate the majesty and tradition of our beloved Crimson Tide, we also long for the opportunity to cheer for football on Sunday. The Stallions give us that opportunity finally.

So, join me, fellow Alabama football fans in extending a warm welcome to our new team in this new league. They have said that they are committed to the long term success. Given time, perhaps we can add some professional banners to those college ones.
