Defense: Malcolm Taylor, DE, Arizona Wranglers. While Arizona lost their game, Taylor did his best to try to secure the win. He recorded two sacks, two forced fumbles, and 7 tackles in the game.

Special Teams: Marc Lewis, KR, Oakland Invaders. Lewis only returned one kick in the game, but he took it 96 yards to the house to help Oakland to a win this week.

Week 11 saw a mixture of expected results and complete head scratchers. On Saturday, both Oakland and Los Angeles won their games, as expected. However, Tampa shockingly lost to Jacksonville in the battle of Florida. Sunday saw another wild upset with San Antonio beating Chicago. Birmingham upended Philadelphia at home, the Stars second loss of the season.

The remainder of the games went as expected with Houston’s offense continuing to run wile and New Jersey notching another win after their terrible start. Memphis defeated Washington and Arizona closed out the week with a huge win in Boston on Monday.

Players of the Week

Offense: Herschel Walker, RB, New Jersey Generals. Walker caught 8 passes for 137 yards and three touchdowns. He added another 68 yards rushing with the other touchdown to account for all of the Generals scoring in the game.

Defense: Will Lewis, DB, Houston Gamblers. Lloyd returned an interception 20 yards for a touchdown and recorded 8 tackles in the Gamblers win over Michigan this week.

Special Teams: Danny Miller, K, Houston Gamblers. Miller was perfect on the day, kicking one field goal and 6 extra points this week.

Another full weekend of USFL football saw games on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. On Friday, Oakland, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh all got wins. Philadelphia’s brings them to 9-1 and was an important division win.

On Saturday, San Antonio won in Arizona and Tampa Bay took care of business at home. Then on Sunday, Birmingham buried Denver to the tune of 52 points. New Jersey kept their win streak alive after a winless start. And, Oakland came back big against Chicago. Los Angeles closed out the weekend by dueling Houston to a victory.

Players of the Week

Offense: Cliff Stoudt, QB, Birmingham Stallions. Stoudt went crazy this week, passing for 457 yards and 7 touchdowns in the Stallions win over the Gold

Defense: Frank Manamuleaga, LB, Oakland Invaders. Manamuleaga recorded 6 tackles and returned an interception for a touchdown in Oakland’s comeback win over Chicago.

Special Teams: Nick Mike-Mayer, K, San Antonio Gunslingers. Mike-Mayer converted all 7 of his kicks, including 5 field goals and 2 extra points to help San Antonio defeat the Wranglers.

1984 USFL Midseason Report

We already went through the records and expectations of the teams after Week 6. While some things are settling in and others have changed and are worth keeping an eye on, for the most part things remain the same from 3 weeks ago. We will update the teams again after week 15 when it hits two-thirds of the way through the season. What did we say? We love math and fractions around here.

Instead, we will spend our time in this article focusing on individual awards. Offensive, defensive, and special teams MVPs plus some of the notable rookie performances so far this year. Celebrate another half year of great USFL football with us. Here’s to many more!

Notable Special Teams Players

Derrick Crawford of the Memphis Showboats leads the league in kick return yardage with an average of 27.1. Clarence Verdin of the surprise Houston Gamblers joins him at the top with the same yardage. On the kicker side of the ball, Jeff Gossett of the Arizona Wranglers is one of the bright spots on the team with a 43.6 (39.1 net) average per punt. Last, but not least, Zenon Andrushyshyn helped Tampa surge into first place by leading the league in scoring and trailing only one other player with an 81.8 percent field goal rate.

Notable Defensive Players

While nobody is running away with the sack title like last year, there are still some players worth mentioning on the defense. Birmingham’s Chuck Clanton leads the league with 8 interceptions after only half a season. Jermaine Copeland of the Oakland Invaders comes in first with 76 tackles. Both lead by only one, so plenty of time for the others to catch them. Even though the Memphis Showboats struggled so far this year, their rookie defensive lineman Reggie White stands out with 16 hurries and 3 sacks, leading both categories.

Notable Offensive Players

Chuck Fusina from Philadelphia and Greg Landry from Chicago are both in the top five in passer rating, leading their respective teams to first place and a possible meeting in the playoffs. Familiar faces Joe Cribbs from Baltimore and Herschel Walker of the New Jersey Generals are 1 and 2 in the rushing race. Cribbs already has over 1000 yards. Walker lags a bit behind, but he showed last year that he comes on strong in the second half of the season. Young Houston Gamblers receivers Richard Johnson and Ricky Sanders join fellow rookie quarterback Jim Kelly at the top of their leader boards.

The midpoint of the season sees only one division truly competitive. While three teams battle for two spots in the Central, four teams are vying for the wild card spot in the East. New Jersey won again to pass Pittsburgh. Boston won and Washington lost to set each team only 1 game apart from one another. Meanwhile, Philadelphia won again to all but clinch the division title.

Chicago, Houston, and Oakland, all playoff teams right now won as well. However, Los Angeles lost, setting up a potential battle for first place in the West. Last, but not least, both Michigan and Jacksonville won their games to close out the results for the week.

Players of the Week

Offense: Jim Kelly, QB, Houston Gamblers. Kelly edged out Chicago quarterback Greg Landry on yardage. They both threw 4 touchdowns in their game, but Kelly threw for 441 yards, giving him the majority of votes this week.

Defense: Tim Lucas, Oakland Invaders. Lucas ruled the day in a defensive struggle in Oakland. He got 13 tackles, 2 stuffs, and 3 forced fumbles against the Federals.

Special Teams: Marcus Bonner, KR, San Antonio Gunslingers. Bonner returned 5 kicks for 170 yards and a 96 yard touchdown in the San Antonio loss to Philadelphia.
