Week 10 Wrap Up

Boston and Michigan opened the week with wins to stay in first place in their divisions. Michigan’s win kept them undefeated on the season. It took the NFL several decades to have their first undefeated team. Can the USFL accomplish that feat in year one?

Philadelphia, Oakland, and Chicago all followed with wins on Sunday afternoon and evening. The week concluded with no real surprises as Birmingham took care of New Jersey. The Stallions continue a mid season surge after digging themselves a bit of a hole to begin.

Week 10 Standings

Players of the Week

Offense: Bobby Hebert, QB, Michigan Panthers. Hebert went 21 of 31 on passes with almost 350 yards and 4 touchdowns to lead the Panthers to a record tying scoring performance. The Panthers remained undefeated on the season with the 59-24 victory over Arizona.

Defense: John Corker, OLB, Michigan Panthers. Corker added to his league leading sack total with 2 and forced a fumble on top of 6 tackles in the Panthers win. Unless someone steps up soon, Corker looks to run away with the defensive player of the year.

Special Teams: Tim Mazzetti, K, Boston Breakers. Mazzetti kicked a perfect game, 3-3 on field goals and extra points for 12 points on the week.

USFL Midseason Report

With 9 weeks in the books, we take a look back at the first half of the inaugural USFL season. Read below for team reports and the midseason awards. Keep reading to the end for an exciting announcement about the 1984 season!

Team Reports

East Division

Boston Breakers (6-3, First Place): The Breakers come out of the first half of the season as one of the surprise teams in the league. Preseason predictions put Philadelphia as the runaway team in the East. Behind both an offense and a defense that rank in the top half of the league, Boston continues to win and push for a postseason berth.

Philadelphia Stars (5-4, Second Place): In spite of having two of the most exciting offensive players in quarterback Chuck Fusina and running back Kelvin Bryant, the Stars endured an up and down first half of the season, reflected in their record and struggle to stay in second place in the division.

New Jersey Generals (3-6, Third Place): New Jersey mortgaged their future for the now by drafting Herschel Walker. The move clearly placed a target on their heads. Teams clearly circle their games with the Generals on the schedule. They concede yardage to Herschel, but keep the rest of the team in check.

Washington Generals (2-7, Fourth Place): Little has gone right for the Generals in the first half of the season. They lost their first 5 games of the season before going 2-2 just before the halfway point. Even so, having dug themselves into such a deep hole, there’s little chance for success this year.

Central Division

Michigan Panthers (9-0, First Place): The Panthers came out firing from the first game and have not looked back since. They remain the only undefeated team and boast an offense and a defense that are tops in the league. This writer sees a potential championship for them at the end of this season.

Chicago Blitz (7-2, Second Place): Somehow, the Blitz at 7-2 have been overlooked. That’s only because they play in the same division as the undefeated Panthers. Otherwise, in either the East or the West, they’d be leading the division. Time, and their ability to beat them, will tell if they can overtake the Panthers.

Birmingham Stallions(5-4, Third Place): The Stallions looked to be going the way of the Federals. However, they righted the ship and reeled off 4 straight victories to climb above .500 and put themselves in the discussion for a postseason spot. The slow start means they are on the outside looking in, but if they can keep winning, who knows?

Tampa Bay Bandits (3-6, Fourth Place):The Bandits suffered a debilitating injury to their starting quarterback and then the back up. This luck is reflected in the standings. Tampa Bay has little recourse other than to start planning for next year.

West

Denver Gold (4-5, First Place): Denver suffered some quarterback troubles early in the year. Even though they have a losing record, it is enough for a three way tie for first place in a, thus far, weak west division. Surely, some team will rise to take hold of this division and the playoff spot promised.

Oakland Invaders (4-5, Second Place): Add the Invaders to the list of underachieving teams. A preseason pick by many to lead the division easily, an inconsistent first half puts them in a tie with Denver and Los Angeles. If any team rises, it will probably be Oakland.

Los Angeles Express (4-5, Third Place): Early in the season, Los Angeles looked to be the cream of the west division crop. But, a three game losing streak brought them back to the pack and struggling to find their form again.

Arizona Wranglers (2-7, Fourth Place): The Wranglers are currently vying with Washington as the worst team in the league. They’ve given their fans little to cheer for this year and even less to look forward to going into next year. It looks to be a grim start to the franchise.

Midseason Awards

Offensive Player Herschel Walker, RB, New Jersey Generals: Herschel came into the season as the most hyped prospect of either the NFL or USFL. New Jersey got the steal of the decade so far by drafting him. He proved everyone right. Herschel is second in the league in rushing yards and in receptions.

Defensive Player John Corker, OLB, Michigan Panthers: In addition to having double the amount of sacks of any other player in the league, Corker is on pace for over 100 tackles on the season. A ferocious defensive presence, he is a good reason the Panthers are undefeated.

Special Teams Woodrow Wilson, KR, Boston Breakers: Wilson is in the top ten in both kick return and punt return average yardage. He also has one of the only kick returns for touchdown in the league this season.

Exciting News for 1984

The USFL will announce 6 expansion teams for next year. The announcements will come once a week starting with week 13 and continuing until week 18. The demand for spring football is high and the USFL looks to cement its legacy as the standard bearer for many years to come. See you in week 13 for the first team announcement!

Week 9 Wrap Up

Philadelphia opened week 9 with a convincing win over Tampa Bay. The Stars continue to keep their playoff and east division hopes alive, but the later it gets into the season, the more likely it is that Philly fans get their hearts broken this year.

Then on Sunday, Michigan kept winning, this time in impressive fashion over the east division leaders Boston. Birmingham, Chicago, and Denver all won close games, too. Denver’s win put them into a three way tie with Oakland and Los Angeles for the division lead.

Speaking of Oakland, after an inconsistent start, the Invaders appear to have found their stride and are the team to watching over the next few weeks in the west division. Thanks to all the fans for their support over the first half of the season and can’t wait to see what happens next.

Special Teams: Anthony Carter, WR/KR, Michigan Panthers. In addition to catching 9 passes for 73 yards, Carter returned a punt 54 yards for a touchdown and helped the Panthers secure a 9-0 record to start the season.

Week 7 Wrap Up

Philadelphia kicker David Trout put on a show on Saturday, scoring 19 points as the Stars defeated the Invaders to open up Week 7. Sunday brought 4 close contests, including a battle for the Central lead, won by the Michigan Panthers. They now have a 2 game advantage over the Blitz.

The Tampa Bay Bandits closed out the week with a win over the West leading Los Angeles Express. LA now only leads Oakland by one for the division. The playoff race is tightening as we head into Week 8 in the USFL. Several important contests on the schedule for next week, including the game of the week between Philadelphia and Boston.

Defense: John Corker, LB, Michigan Panthers. Corker led the way in a defensive battle of the top two teams in the Central and, maybe, even the whole USFL. He recorded 10 tackles and 3 sacks in the Panthers win to pull 2 games ahead of their division rival Chicago Blitz.

Special Teams: David Trout, K, Philadelphia Stars. Trout went 6-6 on field goals and added an extra point, to score a single game record of 19 points and proved to be the difference in the Stars win over the Invaders.

Week 6 Wrap Up

Denver won the only Saturday game this week, defeating Tampa Bay by a touchdown. On a busy Sunday with 4 games, Birmingham started the day by shocking the previously unbeaten Blitz. Michigan, Boston, and Los Angeles all stayed in first place in their respective divisions with wins.

Washington and Arizona ended the week’s slate with an exciting game that was close until the closing minutes. The league closes out the first third of their season in a convincing fashion and have showed fans some great football over these six weeks. Keep joining us every week as we look to end this first season strong.

Offense: Craig James, RB, Washington Federals. James led the Federals offense with 86 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns. His contribution is a key reason for the Federals exciting win on Monday night.

Defense: Emmanuel Thompson, DB, Birmingham Stallions. Thompson was a big reason for the Stallions upset win over the Blitz. He made 6 tackles and 2 interceptions in the game.

Special Teams: Woodrow Wilson, KR, Boston Breakers. Early in the year, we predicted that Wilson would break one sooner or later. He proved us right in this game, returning 4 kicks for 159 yards and a 98 yard touchdown.

Scores and Leaders after Week 4

Arizona opened week four with a much needed win against Birmingham in a defensive struggle. Boston and Philadelphia both handled their opponents easily, winning by at least 20 points before the other two Sunday games offered much closer contests.

Even so, Michigan and Chicago continued to stake their claims as early season favorites for the championship by winning. Chicago, especially, looked impressive in knocking off previously unbeaten Los Angeles. Denver closed out the week by shocking Oakland and keeping slim hopes alive of salvaging their season. Yes, it’s early, but the differences between the haves and have nots are glaring right now in the young league.
