In a dominant performance at Nickerson Field, the Chicago Blitz cruised to a 49-14 victory over the Boston Breakers, improving their record to 6-1 on the season. Chicago’s veteran quarterback, Greg Landry, was the star of the game, throwing for 406 yards and five touchdowns, earning MVP honors. The Blitz’s offense came alive in the second half, with a massive 35-point explosion in the third quarter that effectively sealed the game. Cedric Anderson and Trumaine Johnson were key targets for Landry, combining for over 200 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
The Blitz defense was equally impressive, forcing five Boston turnovers, including a pivotal 35-yard interception return for a touchdown by Frank Minnifield in the third quarter. Boston’s offense struggled throughout the game, with quarterback Matt Robinson completing only 12 of 28 passes for 148 yards, including four interceptions. While Boston running back Buford Jordan provided some spark with 85 rushing yards, the Breakers couldn’t overcome their offensive miscues and defensive lapses.
Boston managed to score a late touchdown in the fourth quarter, a 2-yard pass from Robinson to Mike Sherrard, but it was far too little, too late. The loss drops the Breakers to 2-5, while Chicago continues to build momentum as they sit atop the league standings. With a balanced attack on both sides of the ball, the Blitz are looking like one of the top contenders in the 1985 USFL season.
