The San Antonio Gunslingers ended their season on a high note with a 17-6 victory over the Los Angeles Express at the Alamodome, closing out a tough year for both teams. San Antonio’s defense dominated the game, forcing six turnovers, including two interceptions by MVP Vic Minor. The Gunslingers’ offense capitalized on their opportunities, with Gary Worthy powering his way to two short touchdown runs that proved decisive.
Los Angeles struggled to find rhythm, as quarterback Steve Young endured a forgettable day. Young threw five interceptions and lost a fumble, despite showing flashes of his dual-threat ability by rushing for 40 yards and passing for 237. The Express reached the red zone three times but could only muster two field goals from Tony Zendejas. While JoJo Townsell and Duane Gunn provided sparks with big plays in the passing game, they were not enough to overcome the team’s miscues.
San Antonio controlled the clock with an efficient ground game, racking up 197 rushing yards, led by Scott Stamper’s 78. Fred Mortensen managed the offense with short, safe throws to complement the rushing attack. On defense, Charles Armstead’s three interceptions and a forced fumble highlighted the Gunslingers’ opportunistic play. The win allowed San Antonio to finish 5-13, avoiding the cellar in the Western Conference, while the Express fell to 4-13-1, concluding a frustrating season.
