Breakers Stun Federals in Season Finale Thriller
The Boston Breakers closed out their 1985 campaign on a high note, defeating the Washington Federals 26-21 at Nickerson Field. Led by MVP Buford Jordan, who rushed for 83 yards and two critical touchdowns, Boston overcame a second-half rally from Washington to notch their sixth win of the season. The Breakers’ defense also delivered in clutch moments, intercepting Washington quarterback Joe Collier three times, including two by safety Scott Byers in the final minutes.
Washington, coming into the game with playoff aspirations, struggled to find their footing early. Boston jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first half, with Jordan’s 1-yard plunge capping a short field drive set up by a Washington turnover. The Federals fought back with a gritty performance from running back Greg Walters, who tallied 184 receiving yards, including a spectacular 43-yard touchdown grab in the third quarter. Joe Collier’s fourth-quarter strike to Ricky Simmons gave Washington a 21-20 lead, but it was short-lived as Jordan responded with a decisive 7-yard score.
The Federals had multiple chances to reclaim the lead late but were undone by turnovers and missed opportunities. Boston’s defense rose to the occasion, with Bruce Miller’s interception sealing the victory. While Boston ends their season on a positive note, Washington now faces an uncertain postseason fate, needing help from other results to clinch a spot.
