Invaders Outlast Ace in Overtime Thriller, Clinch Playoff Spot

The Oakland Invaders secured a dramatic 31-28 overtime victory against the Las Vegas Ace in the final week of the regular season at Sam Boyd Stadium. In a game filled with pivotal moments and standout performances, Oakland kicker Jess Atkinson emerged as the hero, connecting on six field goals, including the game-winner from 32 yards out in overtime. With the win, Oakland improved to 10-8, locking in their playoff berth, while the Ace finished a disappointing 2-15-1 in their inaugural campaign.

The game was a back-and-forth battle from the outset. Oakland jumped out to an early 6-0 lead with two Atkinson field goals, but Las Vegas responded when quarterback Jerry Golsteyn found wide receiver Rose for a 30-yard touchdown strike. The two teams traded blows throughout the first half, with Oakland leading 16-13 at the break. Craig Sundberg, who earned MVP honors, was instrumental for the Invaders, throwing for 302 yards and two touchdowns, including a clutch 25-yard scoring pass to Mike Shumann in the fourth quarter.

Las Vegas showed resilience in the final moments, as Golsteyn orchestrated a 14-play, 61-yard drive, capped by a three-yard touchdown pass to Ragsdale, followed by a successful two-point conversion to force overtime. However, their momentum faltered in the extra period, with the Ace offense stalling after three plays. Oakland capitalized on the ensuing possession, driving 53 yards to set up Atkinson’s decisive kick. Despite the loss, Las Vegas can take pride in a valiant effort against a playoff-bound opponent, while Oakland heads into the postseason riding a wave of confidence.
