Los Angeles Express 17, Washington Federals 21

Federals Hold Off Express in Tense Week 17 Battle

The Washington Federals fended off a spirited challenge from the Los Angeles Express, securing a 21-17 victory in a game that showcased high stakes and resilient performances. Playing under chilly conditions at RFK Memorial Stadium, the Federals relied on key contributions from quarterback Mike Collier and wide receiver Joe Walters, whose chemistry proved decisive. Walters, named MVP for the game, hauled in two touchdown passes, including a 33-yard game-winner in the fourth quarter, to seal Washington’s 10th win of the season.

The Express, despite their struggles this season, were determined to spoil the Federals’ postseason ambitions. Led by Steve Young, Los Angeles clawed back from an early deficit, with Young connecting on a clutch 10-yard touchdown pass to Thad Jemison to briefly take a 17-14 lead in the final quarter. However, turnovers plagued the Express, as Washington’s opportunistic defense intercepted Young four times, including a critical pick by Vernon Jackson late in the game to extinguish a potential comeback.

With their playoff hopes now in firm grasp, the Federals showcased a balanced attack. Running back Craig Bledsoe powered the ground game with 110 yards and a touchdown, complementing Collier’s 157 passing yards. Meanwhile, their defense, led by John Brown and Al Hines, repeatedly rose to the occasion, forcing five turnovers and keeping Young’s heroics in check. As Washington looks ahead to the postseason, this gritty victory underscores their ability to win under pressure, while Los Angeles must regroup and build for the future after a challenging campaign.
