Rusty Hilger Leads New Orleans to Stunning Upset Over Memphis
The New Orleans Brass delivered a thrilling 34-26 upset victory over the Memphis Showboats at the Superdome in Week 15 action. Quarterback Rusty Hilger orchestrated a masterful performance, throwing for 314 yards and three touchdowns with a near-perfect passer rating of 152.2. The Brass capitalized on big plays, including a 59-yard punt return touchdown by Danny Knight, which energized the crowd and gave New Orleans a crucial edge in the second quarter.
Memphis struggled to contain the dynamic play of the Brass offense and special teams, though they managed to stay within striking distance. Walter Lewis led the Showboats’ effort, passing for 319 yards and two touchdowns, including a 19-yard strike to Greg Moser late in the third quarter. Running back Tim Spencer added a touchdown on the ground in the fourth, pulling Memphis within two points. However, New Orleans responded with an 8-play, 93-yard drive capped by Richard Crump’s 2-yard touchdown run, sealing the victory.
Both teams demonstrated impressive offensive prowess, finishing with nearly identical total yardage—466 for Memphis and 465 for New Orleans. Yet, the Brass’ ability to convert key third and fourth downs, along with their relentless defensive pressure, proved decisive. Despite Memphis being favored by 11 points, New Orleans showcased resilience and execution, earning only their third win of the season in dramatic fashion.
