Gunslingers Ground Out Victory Over Error-Prone Outlaws
The San Antonio Gunslingers secured a hard-fought 19-7 victory over the Oklahoma Outlaws in a snowy showdown, driven by a relentless defense and the accurate kicking of Nick Mike-Mayer. Despite being held without an offensive touchdown for most of the game, the Gunslingers capitalized on Oklahoma’s seven turnovers, including four interceptions by Doug Williams. Larry James led the San Antonio defense with two critical interceptions, including a pivotal third-quarter pick that set up the only touchdown of the game—a four-yard run by Scott Stamper.
San Antonio’s offense struggled to move the ball consistently, but Mike-Mayer’s steady foot proved decisive. The veteran kicker nailed four field goals, including a 47-yarder in the fourth quarter that put the game out of reach. Rick Neuheisel, while limited in the passing game with just 134 yards and two interceptions, managed to guide the offense effectively enough to complement the dominant defensive effort. Oklahoma, meanwhile, was plagued by dropped passes and a non-existent running game, managing only 29 yards on the ground.
The Outlaws briefly showed life in the third quarter when Doug Williams connected with Willis Adams Steptoe on a 33-yard touchdown strike. However, San Antonio’s defense clamped down from there, forcing multiple turnovers in crucial moments. Oklahoma linebacker Jack Del Rio stood out with 10 tackles and a sack, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the team’s offensive miscues. With the win, San Antonio improves to 5-10, while Oklahoma falls to 4-11 in a season marred by inconsistency for both squads.
