Washington Edges Pittsburgh in Overtime Thriller
The Washington Federals secured a thrilling 30-27 overtime victory against the Pittsburgh Maulers in a pivotal Week 13 clash at Three Rivers Stadium. Running back Steve Sewell was the star of the night, rushing for 117 yards and a touchdown while contributing in key moments. Washington’s kicker, Dan Brockhaus, sealed the game with a 32-yard field goal in overtime, capping a resilient comeback that saw the Federals overcome a 10-point halftime deficit.
Pittsburgh came out strong, highlighted by Greg Walls’ first-quarter interception return for a touchdown and Brian Sipe’s sharp passing. Sipe connected with wideout Flowers for a 20-yard second-quarter score, helping the Maulers establish a 20-10 halftime lead. However, costly turnovers and penalties in the second half opened the door for Washington. The Federals capitalized with a nine-play, 72-yard drive capped by Sewell’s five-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to close the gap.
In a dramatic fourth quarter, Washington tied the game with a clutch Brockhaus field goal before Sipe led a seven-minute scoring drive to reclaim the lead with a five-yard touchdown pass to Kirk Pendleton. Undeterred, Washington quarterback Honensee responded with a quick 37-yard drive, finding Bledsoe in the end zone to force overtime. Washington’s defense held firm in the extra frame, setting up Brockhaus’ game-winner and lifting the Federals to an 8-5 record, strengthening their playoff position.
