New Jersey Generals 31, Denver Gold 28

Flutie, Walker Propel Generals Past Gold in Mile-High Thriller

The New Jersey Generals secured a dramatic 31-28 victory over the Denver Gold in a back-and-forth battle at Mile High Stadium. Quarterback Doug Flutie delivered a standout performance, combining poise and playmaking to lead his team to the win. Flutie threw for 200 yards and two touchdowns while adding a pivotal 14-yard rushing score in the fourth quarter that proved to be the game-winner. Herschel Walker, the game’s MVP, was unstoppable on the ground, rushing for 223 yards, including a spectacular 61-yard touchdown in the second quarter.

Denver started strong, with Bill Johnson’s 17-yard touchdown run capping an opening drive to put the Gold ahead. However, New Jersey responded quickly, with Flutie’s 25-yard touchdown strike to Clarence Collins giving the Generals their first lead at the end of the first quarter. Walker’s electrifying run extended the lead to 17-7, but the Gold countered with consecutive scores, including Bob Gagliano’s 15-yard touchdown pass to Lonnie Turner, to take a 21-17 halftime lead. Both teams traded scores in the third quarter before Flutie orchestrated a 15-play, 97-yard drive in the fourth to seal the victory.

Despite the loss, Denver displayed resilience and explosive potential. Turner led the Gold’s receiving corps with 140 yards and two touchdowns, while Gagliano passed for 276 yards. The Gold’s defense forced two turnovers, but New Jersey’s relentless ground attack and Flutie’s versatility proved too much to overcome. With the win, the Generals improve to 8-4-1 and remain in playoff contention, while the Gold fall to 4-8-1, continuing a frustrating season despite moments of promise.
