Blitz Outlast Gunslingers in Defensive Battle
The Chicago Blitz overcame a gritty effort from the San Antonio Gunslingers to secure a 23-13 victory at the Alamodome in Week 12 of Devin Turner’s 1985 USFL replay league. Chicago struck early with a 10-yard rushing touchdown by MVP Calvin Spencer, who finished with 47 rushing yards and two scores. Kicker Mike Coral added a field goal to give the Blitz a 10-0 lead after one quarter. The Gunslingers responded in the second quarter with a 9-yard touchdown pass from Rick Neuheisel to Scott Stamper, but Spencer’s second touchdown run extended Chicago’s lead to 17-7 at halftime.
The second half showcased a hard-fought defensive struggle, with both teams trading field goals and big stops. Chicago quarterback Alan Landry connected with Bill Boy Bryant for a 17-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter, capping off a short four-play drive. Despite a stellar rushing performance from George Works, who racked up 113 yards on 13 carries, the Gunslingers’ offense was stymied by Chicago’s relentless pass rush, which recorded eight sacks. Ed Smith spearheaded the effort with nine tackles, two sacks, and an interception.
San Antonio’s valiant efforts in the fourth quarter fell short as Neuheisel’s final drive ended with an interception. The Gunslingers managed 270 total yards but were plagued by five fumbles and poor third-down efficiency, converting just one of twelve attempts. With the win, Chicago improved to 10-2, maintaining their stronghold atop the standings, while San Antonio dropped to 3-9 despite showing flashes of resilience.
