Los Angeles responded late in the first half when Kevin Nelson scored on a 2-yard run, cutting the deficit to 13-7. However, Chicago’s John Coral hit a 42-yard field goal before the break to extend the Blitz’s lead to 16-7.
The third quarter saw both teams struggle with turnovers, but Chicago added to their lead with another Coral field goal, making it 19-7. The Express quickly struck back when Frank Seurer found Thad Jemison for a 1-yard touchdown, although a missed extra point kept Chicago ahead 19-13. Early in the fourth quarter, Seurer connected with tight end Gordon Hudson for a 10-yard touchdown, giving Los Angeles its first lead of the game at 20-19. However, Chicago answered with a game-winning drive, as Landry hit Carl Ricker for a 13-yard touchdown pass with just over four minutes remaining. A successful two-point conversion gave Chicago a 27-20 advantage.
The Blitz’s defense held strong in the final minutes, forcing Los Angeles into a turnover on their last possession to secure the victory. Greg Landry finished with 321 passing yards and two touchdowns, while Spencer was named MVP for his dual-threat performance, recording 71 rushing yards and 81 receiving yards. Chicago’s dominant time of possession (42:37) and effective ground game proved crucial in overcoming the scrappy Express, who managed only 146 yards of total offense.
