Oakland Invaders 25, Birmingham Stallions 28

The Birmingham Stallions survived a thrilling comeback attempt by the Oakland Invaders to secure a 28-25 victory at Legion Field. Birmingham quarterback Cliff Stoudt was named MVP, leading his team with 314 passing yards and three touchdowns. The Stallions started strong, scoring two touchdowns in the first half, with Stoudt connecting on passes to Ken Toler and Jim Smith for scores. By halftime, they led 14-7 after Oakland responded with a touchdown from Craig Sundberg to Gordon Banks.

In the second half, the Stallions extended their lead with a four-yard rushing touchdown from Joel Coles, but Oakland fought back. Sundberg found John Williams for two fourth-quarter touchdowns, the second of which gave the Invaders a 25-21 lead with just under two minutes remaining. Oakland’s defense had tightened up, but Stoudt orchestrated a quick two-play, 64-yard drive, capped by a 17-yard touchdown pass to Troy Johnson to reclaim the lead for Birmingham.

Oakland had a chance to mount one final drive, but Sundberg’s interception sealed the game in favor of Birmingham. The Stallions controlled the clock, holding the ball for over 35 minutes, while their defense forced two turnovers, including the game-clinching interception. This victory brings Birmingham to a 5-4 record, while Oakland falls to 4-5 in the tightly contested USFL playoff race.
