Chicago Blitz 7, New Jersey Generals 19

The New Jersey Generals’ defense and special teams dominated the Chicago Blitz in a 19-7 victory at Giants Stadium. Though both teams were scoreless after the first quarter, New Jersey took control in the second with a balanced attack and a series of long drives. Generals kicker Roger Ruzek was a key contributor, nailing three field goals in the quarter, including a 21-yarder to open the scoring. Doug Flutie connected with Barry Hanna for a 9-yard touchdown pass late in the half, helping New Jersey head into the locker room with a commanding 16-0 lead.

Chicago struggled to generate any offensive rhythm throughout the game, hampered by turnovers and a stifling New Jersey defense. The Blitz’s only score came early in the fourth quarter, when quarterback Greg Landry threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Bill Boy Bryant, capping off a 7-play, 68-yard drive. However, that would be the only bright spot for Chicago, as they managed just 205 total yards and turned the ball over four times. New Jersey’s defense, led by Frank Mattiace and John Miller, constantly harassed Landry, keeping him under pressure and forcing mistakes.

Herschel Walker was the offensive star for the Generals, rushing 36 times for 172 yards, allowing New Jersey to dominate time of possession. Ruzek added his fourth field goal of the game late in the fourth quarter, sealing the win and improving New Jersey’s record to 5-2-1. Chicago, now 6-2, will look to bounce back after this tough road loss.
