In a high-scoring affair at the Astrodome, the Houston Gamblers extended their undefeated streak to six games with a commanding 56-35 victory over the Oklahoma Outlaws. The game was a shootout from the start, with both teams trading touchdowns in the first quarter. Oklahoma struck first with a Doug Williams touchdown pass to Alphonso Turner, but Houston’s Jim Kelly quickly responded with a scoring strike to Richard Johnson. Despite Oklahoma’s best efforts, Kelly’s arm proved too much, as he connected for five touchdown passes, including two to Ricky Sanders.
The second quarter saw the Gamblers begin to pull away, as Kelly orchestrated two more touchdown drives, highlighted by a 37-yard bomb to Johnson and a 26-yard pass to Sanders. The Outlaws, however, refused to go quietly, with Doug Williams finding Turner for their third touchdown connection of the day, keeping the game within reach at halftime. Yet, every time Oklahoma seemed poised to make a comeback, Houston had an answer. Running back Sam Fowler added two rushing touchdowns, and the Gamblers’ defense chipped in with a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown by Will Lewis late in the fourth quarter, sealing the win.
Doug Williams put up a valiant effort for Oklahoma, throwing for 407 yards and three touchdowns, all to Turner. However, Jim Kelly once again stole the show, passing for 508 yards and five touchdowns, earning him MVP honors. The victory solidifies Houston’s dominance in the USFL, while Oklahoma drops to 1-5 on the season, continuing their struggles despite a strong offensive performance.
