In a gritty defensive battle at RFK Memorial Stadium, the Boston Breakers stunned the Washington Federals with a 13-10 victory, overcoming a 12-point underdog status. Washington started strong, opening the scoring with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Mike Honensee to Joey Walters late in the first quarter. However, Boston’s defense tightened, forcing turnovers and keeping the Federals scoreless through the second and third quarters. A crucial second-quarter field goal by Tim Mazzetti and a late touchdown run by Buford Jordan propelled the Breakers to a 10-7 halftime lead.
The second half saw both teams struggling offensively, with each defense dominating the line of scrimmage. Boston managed to extend their lead to 13-7 in the third quarter with another field goal from Mazzetti. Washington responded with a lengthy 75-yard drive in the fourth quarter, but could only muster a 26-yard field goal from Jeff Brockhaus, narrowing the deficit to 13-10. Despite outgaining Boston in total yards, the Federals’ five turnovers, including three interceptions by Honensee, proved too costly.
Buford Jordan earned MVP honors for his pivotal role, rushing for 127 yards on 21 carries and scoring the game-winning touchdown. The Breakers’ defense, led by Bruce Miller and Raymond Polk, who combined for 16 tackles and two interceptions, was instrumental in preserving the win. With this victory, Boston improves to 2-4, while Washington falls to 3-3 in a tightly contested game that highlighted the resilience of the Breakers.
