The San Antonio Gunslingers edged out the Los Angeles Express in a thrilling 41-31 contest at LA Memorial Coliseum, improving to 4-3 on the season. San Antonio struck first with a Nick Mike-Mayer field goal and built momentum in the second quarter behind Rick Neuheisel’s two touchdown passes to Joey Hackett. The Gunslingers dominated much of the first half, scoring 21 points in the second quarter and leading 24-10 at halftime.
Los Angeles, led by Steve Young, mounted a fierce second-half comeback. Young connected with JoJo Townsell for two long touchdowns and helped tie the game 31-31 in the fourth quarter. Kevin Nelson also chipped in with a six-yard touchdown run as the Express fought to erase the deficit. However, Neuheisel and the Gunslingers responded with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Williams, followed by a Mike-Mayer field goal to seal the victory.
Neuheisel finished the game with 278 yards and three touchdowns, while Young threw for 303 yards and three scores but was hampered by four interceptions. The Gunslingers’ defense capitalized on key turnovers, and their balanced attack—133 rushing yards to go with Neuheisel’s passing—proved too much for the Express to overcome.
