The Memphis Showboats continued their perfect season, securing a 28-14 victory over the Birmingham Stallions in Week 7 of the USFL season. Memphis quarterback Walter Lewis showcased his dual-threat capabilities, leading the team to a commanding win with both his arm and legs. Lewis threw for 140 yards and two touchdowns while adding another 78 yards and a score on the ground, proving why he’s considered one of the league’s most dynamic players.
The game started evenly, with both teams exchanging touchdowns in the first quarter. Memphis opened the scoring with a 26-yard touchdown pass from Lewis to Derek Crawford, but Birmingham quickly responded with a 24-yard strike from Cliff Stoudt to Ken Toler. However, the Showboats took control in the second quarter, as Lewis scored on a 22-yard run and later connected with Gary Shirk for an 18-yard touchdown, sending Memphis into halftime with a 21-7 lead.
Memphis dominated the second half, with Leonard Williams adding a 4-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to extend their lead. Although Birmingham managed to find the end zone once more with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Stoudt to Jim Smith in the fourth quarter, it wasn’t enough to close the gap. The Showboats’ balanced attack, which racked up 287 rushing yards, and their stifling defense, which held Birmingham to just 263 total yards, kept the Stallions at bay and preserved Memphis’ undefeated record.
