In a thrilling Week 4 matchup at Nickerson Field, the Boston Breakers pulled off a stunning upset, defeating the heavily favored Pittsburgh Maulers 34-27. The Breakers jumped out to an early lead with a dominant first quarter, highlighted by Ron Johnson’s 21-yard touchdown run and a 17-yard touchdown pass from Matt Robinson to Johnson. Boston continued to apply pressure in the second quarter, extending their lead to 21-7 before Pittsburgh began to claw back into the game.
Pittsburgh, led by veteran quarterback Brian Sipe, managed to narrow the gap to 13-21 by halftime with a 13-yard touchdown run by Mike Rozier and a late second-quarter touchdown pass from Sipe to Kirk Pendleton. The Maulers continued their comeback in the second half, eventually tying the game at 24-24 early in the fourth quarter, thanks to another Sipe-to-Pendleton touchdown connection and a successful two-point conversion. A 50-yard field goal by Steve Jordan then gave Pittsburgh their first lead of the game, 27-24, with just over four minutes remaining.
However, Boston refused to back down, responding with a game-tying 27-yard field goal by Tim Mazzetti and then delivering the decisive blow with just 55 seconds left on the clock. Matt Robinson connected with Frank Lockett on a 38-yard touchdown pass, sealing the victory for the Breakers. Despite a valiant effort by the Maulers, the Breakers’ balanced offensive attack and resilient defense proved too much, handing Pittsburgh their first loss of the season and giving Boston a much-needed win to improve to 1-3 on the year.
