In a thrilling Week 2 Monday night clash at Oakland-Alameda Coliseum, the Oakland Invaders edged out the Washington Federals 37-31, buoyed by an early offensive onslaught and a clutch late-game field goal. The Invaders started strong, dominating the first half with a commanding 31-7 lead, thanks to touchdowns from Eric Jordan, Tom Newton, Gordon Banks, and Mike Shumann. The Federals struggled to find their footing initially, managing only a lone touchdown in the second quarter from quarterback Joe Honensee to wide receiver Herman Simmons.
The second half saw a spirited comeback from Washington, as they chipped away at Oakland’s lead. Kicker Dave Brockhaus opened the third quarter with a field goal, followed by two touchdowns from Honensee to Gerald Taylor. Washington’s defense tightened, forcing turnovers and limiting Oakland to just six points in the second half. A one-yard touchdown run by Curtis Bledsoe and another scoring pass from Honensee to Taylor brought the Federals within three points late in the fourth quarter.
With the game on the line, Oakland’s steady ground game and precise passing allowed them to march down the field. Kicker Jess Atkinson, who had been perfect all night, sealed the victory with a 32-yard field goal as time expired. Eric Jordan earned MVP honors for his 109 rushing yards and a touchdown, helping the Invaders secure their first win of the season and leave Washington still searching for their first victory.
