Bandits Dominate Federals in Season Opener

The Tampa Bay Bandits kicked off their 1985 season with a commanding 34-16 victory over the Washington Federals at Tampa Stadium. Led by quarterback John Reaves, who threw for 321 yards and three touchdowns, the Bandits showcased their offensive prowess early, jumping to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Reaves connected with wide receiver Eric Truvillion twice for touchdowns in the first quarter, setting the tone for the game. Tampa Bay’s defense also played a significant role, holding Washington to just nine points until the fourth quarter and forcing crucial turnovers.

Washington struggled to find consistency on offense despite a solid effort from quarterback Joe Gilliam, who passed for 227 yards and one touchdown. The Federals managed to close the gap to 14-9 in the second quarter with a field goal and a touchdown pass from Gilliam to wide receiver Joey Walters. However, Tampa Bay responded swiftly with another touchdown from Reaves to Larry Brodsky and a field goal by Zenon Andrusyshyn, extending their lead to 24-9 at halftime. The Bandits’ ground game, led by running back Gary Anderson, added another layer of difficulty for the Federals’ defense.

In the second half, the Bandits maintained their momentum, with Anderson scoring on a five-yard run in the third quarter. Despite a brief spark from Washington’s defense, which scored on a 57-yard interception return by cornerback Greg Best in the fourth quarter, Tampa Bay sealed their victory with another Andrusyshyn field goal. The Bandits’ balanced attack and strong defensive performance underscored their dominance, leaving the Federals with much to address as they look to rebound in the upcoming games.
