USFL Playoff Picture Takes Shape

As the 1984 USFL season charges forward, the playoff picture is beginning to crystallize, with teams jockeying for coveted postseason spots. Let’s take a closer look at each division’s standings:

Atlantic Division:

  1. Philadelphia Stars: 11-2-0 (.846)
  2. New Jersey Generals: 7-6-0 (.538)
  3. Washington Federals: 6-7-0 (.462)
  4. Boston Breakers: 5-8-0 (.385)
  5. Pittsburgh Maulers: 3-10-0 (.231)

The Stars continue to shine brightly, leading the Atlantic Division with an impressive 11-2 record. New Jersey has made a late-season surge, winning six consecutive games to secure the second spot. Washington, Boston, and Pittsburgh are still in contention but face an uphill battle.

Southern Division:

  1. Tampa Bay Bandits: 10-3-0 (.769)
  2. Birmingham Stallions: 9-4-0 (.692)
  3. Memphis Showboats: 5-8-0 (.385)
  4. Jacksonville Bulls: 4-9-0 (.308)

Tampa Bay holds a strong position at the top of the Southern Division, while Birmingham follows closely. Both teams are in excellent playoff contention. Memphis and Jacksonville are not out of the race, but time is running out.

Central Division:

  1. Chicago Blitz: 10-3-0 (.769)
  2. Houston Gamblers: 9-4-0 (.692)
  3. Michigan Panthers: 7-6-0 (.538)
  4. San Antonio Gunslingers: 5-8-0 (.385)
  5. Oklahoma Outlaws: 1-12-0 (.071)

The Central Division is highly competitive, with Chicago and Houston leading the pack. Michigan is still in the mix, while San Antonio and Oklahoma face challenging odds for postseason play.

Pacific Division:

  1. Los Angeles Express: 10-3-0 (.769)
  2. Oakland Invaders: 9-4-0 (.692)
  3. Denver Gold: 4-9-0 (.308)
  4. Arizona Wranglers: 3-10-0 (.231)

The Pacific Division is dominated by Los Angeles and Oakland, both well-positioned for playoff berths. Denver, despite a subpar record, still has a shot at the postseason. Arizona faces an uphill battle.

Playoff Format:

  • The top two teams in each division will make the playoffs.
  • A total of eight teams (two from each division) will compete for the USFL championship.
