Derek Owens (DOwens_Stallions)
Derek Owens (DO): Mr. Warner, what an exciting day for Birmingham and football fans across Alabama. How did you react when you received the news that Birmingham would have its own USFL team in 1983?
Marvin Warner (MW): Derek, it’s truly a thrilling moment for the city and for me personally. When I got the news, I couldn’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of pride and excitement. Bringing a USFL team to Birmingham is a dream come true, and I believe it’s a fantastic opportunity for our community.
DO: The Stallions are now a reality. What made you choose Birmingham for a USFL franchise, and what do you envision for the team’s role in the community?
MW: Birmingham has a rich sports tradition and a passionate fan base. The city deserves to have a team that reflects its spirit, and the Stallions are here to do just that. We want to create more than a football team; we want to build a community, a family that rallies together around our Stallions. I see this team becoming an integral part of Birmingham’s identity.
DO: With the USFL gaining momentum nationally, what do you think this league brings to the landscape of American football, and how do the Stallions fit into that vision?
MW: The USFL is a groundbreaking venture, providing an alternative for football enthusiasts in the spring. It’s an opportunity for players to showcase their talent, and for fans to enjoy high-quality football outside the traditional season. The Stallions aim to be a force in this league, contributing to the growth and success of the USFL while giving Birmingham a team they can be proud of.
DO: As the owner, what message would you like to send to the fans who are eagerly awaiting the Stallions’ inaugural season?
MW: To the fans of Birmingham, get ready for an incredible journey. We’re building something special here, and your support means everything. Come join us at Legion Field, be part of the Stallions family, and let’s make history together. This is just the beginning, and I can’t wait to see the Stallions galloping to victory with the entire city behind them.
