In their first ever game, the Houston Gamblers outgunned the Tampa Bay Bandits, 44-41. Rookie quarterback Jim Kelly threw for almost 300 yards and 2 touchdowns to give Houston fans a glimpse of what the future might hold. But the real star of the game for the Gamblers was running back Todd Fowler who ran for almost 200 yards and 2 touchdowns himself.
The USFL promised more offense this year. This game more than lived up to that promise. Tampa Bay accounted for 717 of the combined 1200 plus yards put up by both teams. Quarterback John Reaves topped Kelly with 473 yards and 3 touchdowns. 233 of those yards went to Willie Gillespie. Running back Gary Anderson added 128 yards and two more touchdowns.
