Denver Gold 21, Los Angeles Express 31

Denver and Los Angeles kicked off their 1984 USFL season with a thrilling win for the Express. They traded scores for the entire game with LA pulling ahead by 10 with a little over 2 minutes left in the game. New quarterback Steve Young led the Express with 2 touchdowns passing. The running game added another two touchdowns.

The game showcased the leagues new commitment to offense and scoring. Both teams amassed over 300 yards of total offense and scored the 52 points. On the Denver side of the ball, their new quarterback Craig Penrose threw for over 250 yards. However, he passed for no touchdowns and one interception.
