Game Recap
The Tampa Bay Bandits and Boston Breakers opened the 1983 USFL season with a game dominated throughout by the Bandits. Tampa Bay surged out to a 17-0 lead on touchdowns by Gary Anderson and Carl Franks. Franks, who was injured early in the 3rd quarter (dislocated shoulder) and will be out 14 weeks, led the Bandits in rushing. In spite of the injury, Tampa Bay looks good at the running back position as Anderson and Greg Boone combined for 75 yards rushing and seem more than capable of carrying the load. Anderson also led the team in receiving with 9 receptions for 93 yards.
Boston briefly cut the lead to 17-7 with a fumble return for a touchdown and the two teams traded field goals at the end of the half and the Breakers went into the half only down 10. But, Tampa Bay put it away in the second half with their third rushing touchdown of the game. Boston tries to bounce back next week in Denver. Tampa Bay hosts Michigan in an attempt to start the season 2-0.
