Darksiders 2 (360): I was a fan of the first Darksiders, mostly because I’m a huge fan of Joe Mad’s artwork, and also because I liked the Devil May Cry/God of War/Zelda hybrid-feel to it. Was it the most original game? God no. Anytime you can call a game the hybrid of <insert game titles here> then it’s not all that original. Strangely though, despite the less than the original concepts, it was a really fun game with some mind-blowing bosses. Last week, during my nightly eBay perusing, I saw a copy of Darksiders 2 about to sell for $4.75 with free shipping, so I swooped in with 8 seconds to go and got it for an even $5.00, ruining someone’s night and making mine a bit better. Double bonus. After playing it for a few days, I can say that this game is much different from the original Darksiders. The biggest difference being the addition of loot. You now get coins and more importantly, equipment that you can either use, sell, or sacrifice to level up the equipment you have. Just this one aspect makes this game more enjoyable to me. Also, I like the fact that the battles are not one after another after another after another..etc..so you actually get some time to explore the enviroments. It gives the game an RPG kinda feel to it. The puzzles are a lot more interesting, a couple reminded me of Portal, (you have to fire portals to get from point A to point B),and generally they didn’t piss me off like some of the puzzles in the original. Not that the original’s were incredibly difficult, just incredibly frickin’ long. I actually really enjoy playing as Death more than I did playing as War in D1 (tired of typing Darksi…damn..<sigh>…Darksiders). Death’s abilities are more interesting and just plain cooler. He can create doppelgangers of himself, wall-walk, summon monsters, and opens doors and chests with ghostly hands. His scythes are pretty damn neat too. The bosses from what I’ve seen so far are huge but not as challenging as the bosses in D1. We’ll see if that holds true as I get deeper into the game. Speaking of which, I read earlier that this game is larger than the D1, so that’s another bonus. Overall I’m really happy with this game, definitely worth 5 bucks. And ruining someone’s night.

Blond’s Top 5 Dragons of Tarkir Cards
It’s that time again folks, a new expansion is yet again on the radar. Which means another Top 5 list! I’ll be honest, Dragons of Tarkir has me more excited than any other set since I’ve started playing (that’s saying a lot because I absolutely loved Theros). It actually took me quite a long time to narrow down my favorite cards to only 5. Remember, this list is exactly that: MY top 5. I’m in no way saying these are the best cards in the set. These are simply the top 5 cards that I’m looking forward to playing and that I predict will see some action in Standard.
5. Savage Ventmaw
A 4/4 G/R flyer for 6 mana doesn’t sound like a good deal at all does it? What makes this fellow interesting is its ability to generate 6 mana (3 red, 3 green) every time it attacks. Look for this guy to make an appearance in Atarka ramp decks. Speaking of Atarka…
4. Dragonlord Atarka
7 mana (5GR) for an 8/8 dragon with flying and trample is already pretty decent. But when you add in it’s ability to deal 5 damage divided anyway you choose between your opponent’s creatures and planeswalkers when it enters the battlefield makes this card a must have in my book.
3. Gleam of Authority
An Enchantment that gives the enchanted creature +1/+1 for each +1/+1 counter on your other creatures. It also grants the enchanted creature the ability of Bolster, which pumps your other creatures up, which then in turn pumps your enchanted creature up even more. I have a feeling that this card will see some action in Heroic decks.
2. Thunderbreak Regent
Only 4 mana for a 4/4 flyer and when you opponent gets cheeky and decides to take it out, Thunderbreak does 3 damage to that player. I’m really pumped for this guy. I’m planning on running a playset in the new dragon deck that I’m currently brewing. (I’ll make sure I post the deck when I finish tweaking it).
Which brings us to ……………………………………………………….

1. Zurgo Bellstriker
What the hell!? Zurgo Bellstriker?! Not Narset Transcendent?! Not Deathmist Raptor?! Yes, Zurgo ****ing Bellstriker. I’m expecting that this guy will be a staple in all RDW and/or aggro decks and not only that, will be popular in all formats, not just standard. A one drop 2/2 with a weak drawback is pretty rare, and his dash ability can make your opponent’s life miserable. Is he unstoppable? No. Realistically he only shines in an aggro deck as his weak drawback (he can’t block creatures with power 2 or greater ) can actually become a liability later in the game. If you draw him in your opening hand though…look out.
Honorable mentions:
Ire Shaman, Commune with Lava, Narset Transcendent, Anafenza, Kin-Tree Spirit, Atarka’s Command, Avatar of the Resolute, Inspiring Call, Shaman of the Forgotten Ways, Dragonlord Silumgar, Sarkhan Unbroken, Hidden Dragonslayer, Sunscorch Regent, Blood-Chin Rager
So about last night…(a.k.a Our First Journey into the World of Standard)
Last night was our monthly gaming night as well as our scheduled podcast-recording session (it was a great show, definitely check it out once it’s up). It was also the first time that I have ever played Standard. Note: Shawn has attended a prerelease event in the past but I’m not counting it as it was sealed. So exactly how did two legacy guys end playing Standard?
It started about a week and a half ago, we were chatting about how excited we were for Dragons and for some reason I started thinking of the ways it will shake up Standard. Would there suddenly be an influx of ramp decks? Warrior decks that utilize the powerful Dragon Hunter? At that point it hit me: it didn’t matter. We only played Legacy and Modern. Why was I so interested in what was going on with Standard? It certainly wasn’t going to affect us any..or would it? I sent Shawn a message suggesting that we jump onto the Standard boat for a trial run. He immediately liked the idea and suddenly the fire was lit.
I thought of brewing a Red Deck Wins and an Abzan Aggro. I already had both of those deck types built so I figured that besides replacing a few cards and doing some tweaking, they were all set for Standard action. Wrong. I essentially had to break both of those decks down to the point of scrapping them and completely rebuilding. After removing all of the non-Standard cards, I was left with approximately 27 cards in my Abzan and even less in my Red Deck Wins. I decided that the Red Deck Wins was a lost cause so that went straight into the Legacy part of the my collection (also Shawn was building one and sometimes aggro vs aggro can feel…less than mentally stimulating). Since this was a time of change and getting out of our comfort zone, I decided to look into a mechanic from the Theros block that originally didn’t impress me in the least bit; Constellation. I’m glad I changed my mind about it because I love the combo aspect of the game and this deck is all about combos. After playtesting the deck a few times I felt very foolish for ignoring the mechanic for over a year. The Abzan deck was slightly easier to tweak..throw a couple of Siege Rhinos in, sprinkle in some Fleecemane Lions and you have an aggro deck. OK, Ok, it was more complicated than that but I won’t bore you with the exact details of how I crafted that deck.
So how did it turn out? Well to be perfectly honest we played 3 games last night, 2 Standard and 1 Legacy..and the Standard games were far more intriguing and close. The first game was my Constellation deck vs his Temur. I roared out to an early lead, dropping a few 2 drop Enchantment creatures and kept gaining life while chipping away at his. But Shawn is a resilient player and didn’t go down easily. He battled back, removing creatures and sending my Master of the Feast back to my hand repeatedly. In the end I prevailed but that was only due to a Banishing Light that I was holding in my hand. The 2nd game was even better in my opinion..it was Abzan vs Abzan. In the end despite the fact that I kept fighting back by gaining life and pumping up my creatures, I was straight up outplayed and lost. I made some misplays that screwed me over..but even if I didn’t he had me dead to rights. The 3rd game we played was a Legacy and it wasn’t close. I walked away with the “W” but it wasn’t satisfactory. I rather win by a narrow margin then by a landslide any day. There is no excitement in a game like that. After that game, I kind of kicked myself for not building a 3rd Standard deck. It’s hard to go from 2 interesting games to a 3rd not-so-interesting game. So are we Standard guys now? To a certain extent I think we are. The deck building is more challenging but the back and forth nature of the games makes up for the limited pool of cards you can choose from. Now am I saying that we are done playing Legacy/done posting Legacy deck list/ done talking about Legacy? No, no way. Legacy is the format that our 2 man group started with. I can’t speak for my buddy but Legacy was feeling slightly stale to me over the last few months so it’s nice to flex that mental muscle and keep things fresh by going Standard.
Keep checking this site as there will be more Standard deck lists, and even videos of our games to check out. Also, I posted the Constellation deck mentioned above in our deck lists section.
B/W Constellation (Standard)
*Sigh* I know, I know…it’s been since October since we’ve posted a deck list. Well, I’m here to rectify that problem right now with my very first Standard deck: Black and White Constellation. Pause. Yes, I said my very first Standard deck. In the past, we have been exclusively Modern/Legacy players but have just discovered that Standard can be a far more intriguing form of the game. Now back to the deck. Just like any good Constellation deck it contains mostly Enchantments and Enchantment Creatures that interact with each other and trigger multiple effects when they hit the battlefield. I actually just played this one for the first time tonight against Shawn’s Temur. It more than held its own and was a blast to play.
The Deck (60 cards)
Enchantment Creatures: Enchantments:
4x Master of the Feast 2x Armament of Nyx
2x Doomwake Giant 2x Aspect of Gorgon
2x Underworld Coinsmith 4x Banishing Light
4x Grim Guardian 2x Oppressive Rays
2x Sightless Brawler 2x Ordeal of Heliod
1x Brain Maggot Artifacts:
1x Erebos, God of the Dead 1x Spear of Heliod
2x Herald of Torment Lands:
4x Spiteful Returned 6x Plains
3x Baleful Eidolon 8x Swamps
2x Nyx-Fleece Ram 4x Scoured Barrens
1x Gnarled Scarhide
Creatures:
1x Soldier of the Pantheon
Note: Once Theros rotates out, this deck can be a killer Legacy deck..throw some copies of Underworld Dreams into this deck and watch it combo with Master of the Feast. Death by drawing.
Booster Break!
Welcome to our new column Booster Break! It’s exactly what it sounds like, we will be opening assorted booster packs and boxes and showing you guys and gals our monumental pulls and/or spectacular failures via video or pics. ‘ This month I’ll be showing you what I pulled from a Marvel Heroclix Fear Itself booster and a Marvel Heroclix Guardians of the Galaxy booster.
Okay first up is the Fear Itself booster pack. I think I actually did really well with this one, not just because I pulled some strong characters, but because I didn’t get the typical 3 commons, instead it was comprised of 2 commons, 2 uncommons and 1 rare. No super rares or chase, but I was happy with the rare I pulled.
Monkey King (common)
Asgardian Troll (common)
Ms.Marvel (uncommon)
Tanarus (uncommon)
Dr. Strange (rare)
Alright onto the next booster…this one is a Guardian of the Galaxy booster pack. I didn’t do well on this one, some cool sculpts but nothing that stuck out as being playable
Triton (common)
Brother Royal (common)
Nebula (common)
Nova (uncommon)
Shriek (rare)
Yup, this pack sucked..but the sculpts for Nova and Triton (not pictured) are pretty decent, too bad they are not strong in play.
That’s it for this edition of Booster Breaks! Thanks for reading!
Breaking New Ground: Heroclix
One of the most important things that we have learned from producing our podcast and writing for this website is that it really forces us to expand our gaming horizons. Let ‘s be honest, we can ‘t just write about Xbox and Magic the Gathering all of the time. That would be boring as hell for you as well as boring for us. Variety is the spice of life and there are some great games out there that deserve their moment in the spotlight. As Shawn has already covered the World of Warcraft card game I thought I would take a little time to talk about the next game that we will be dabbling in; Heroclix.
Late last summer, Shawn mentioned that he would like to try the Warmachine/Hordes tabletop game in order to really bring our nerdiness to the next level. OK, OK, it was actually because he has had an ongoing interest in trying a tabletop game, also the models looked great and the paint/craft aspect was appealing to him. Being an artist, the paint aspect intrigued me as well so I googled the game and was amazed at how incredible the models looked. Then I realized I googled Whores not Hordes. Heh..bad joke..sorry..ahem.. seriously though the models are absolutely amazing and I was immediately fumbling for my debit card. Then I saw the price tag. Game over. Since I have never played a tabletop miniatures game I couldn ‘t justify spending hundreds of dollars to get enough models to build an army. I mean that ‘s a lot of scratch lost if for some reason the game isn ‘t that good. So instead I decided that it would be better to go with the low cost alternative; Heroclix, so we could get a feel for tabletop gaming. We are both comic geeks so it seemed like a good fit. Being completely ignorant in the ways of ?Clix, I logged onto Ebay and ordered the first booster I saw (Marvel Sinister). A week later it arrived and I eagerly tore the box open. What the?! Where were the character cards?! More importantly where were the goddamn functional dials?! The dials were terrible; it was extremely tough to move it even 1 click on every piece. Frustrated, I slammed them back in the box and tossed them in the closet. I couldn ‘t understand why people spoke so highly of the game. I sent a message to Shawn letting him know that I thought I should have done more research on the game before making a purchase. After a couple of days, I decided to ?Wiki ? Heroclix and found out that the Sinister set was one of the very first expansions. The first sets had crappy dials, and had no character cards, you just had to memorize the powers. To get actual functional dials and character cards, I would need to buy a more recent set. Long story short, I bought a booster of Fear Itself and a booster of Guardians of the Galaxy. I won ‘t get into every piece that I got as that will be coming in a new column where we ‘ll document our pack and box breaks with pictures or video. (Cheap plug.)
So what are my first impressions of the game? Well that ‘s tough to say, we have yet to play an actual “real” game..but I ‘ve played myself (I can hear your jokes from here.), and it’s gone well. I ‘ve started to be able to memorize what the colors on the dials mean. I was a bit overwhelmed when I first opened the rulebook but just taking the time to actually study and memorize the colors on the dials, the powers they represent and their meanings made a world of difference. I really like the heavy emphasis on strategy and building the right team. From building your team right up to your last move, you really have to think before you act. It ‘s like chess but with cooler pieces..aaaaand a ton more rules. As far as the actual pieces themselves ‘well it ‘s never going to be confused with Warmachine/Hordes but some of the sculpts are pretty damn good (Tanarus and Dr. Strange come to mind). But some of them are pretty damn goofy too. With that said, the good sculpts definitely outnumber the bad ones. I’m really looking forward to playing an actual game in the near future. I picked up this game as a way to get acclimated to the world of tabletop gaming and as a primer for Warmachine but to my surprise I found a really great game that will most likely stick around in my gaming rotation.
Collector’s Corner Vol.1: The Madness Returns
New year! New column! During my absence, I picked up a good number of new video games thanks to Christmas, my birthday and my collecting addiction rearing its ugly head again. Yes, the same ugly addiction that I spent an entire article preaching about how I kicked its ass..has crept back into my life. Well kind of. It’s not as bad as before and I’m actually playing what I’m buying this time around. With that said, my game room/man cave/ nerd den has been slowly filling up over the past month so I thought that going forward; I will share some of the recent additions to my game collection with you guys.
Hyperkin Retron 2: For years I’ve seen the various Retron consoles on Amazon.com and have always scoffed at them. No way was I EVER going to play a single game on a…bleck.. 3rd party console. Plus, no matter what version there always seemed to be some bad reviews concerning certain games not working on them and the sound being sub par at best. Welp, long story short, there was one under the
ol’ Christmas tree for yours truly and I have to say that I’m actually really impressed with this console. It plays SNES and NES games without having to blow into the carts for 5 minutes like a jackass (Yes, I replaced the 72 Pin in my original NES, and no, it wasn’t a dramatic improvement). As far as games not working goes, I own a decent collection of NES games and I haven’t run into one yet that didn’t immediately work. I also really like this console because it cuts back on the amount of wires I have behind my TV and saves on plug space in the power tree (one console as opposed to two) which is essential if you are like me and want all of your consoles to be “Plug and Play”.
South Park: The Stick of Truth (360): I’m a huge fan of South Park, but to be honest I didn’t have high expectations for this game when it was first announced. I was pleasantly surprised. Don’t be fooled by the South Park skin, at this game’s core lies a really solid JRPG. It also doesn’t hurt that it’s hilarious and makes you feel like you are actually in an episode of the show.
Final Fantasy Anthology (PSX): Speaking of JRPG’s, my girlfriend picked up this gem for me. Final Fantasy 5 and 6…you just can’t go wrong. After I complete South Park I plan on diving into FF5.
Deathsmiles (360): A bullet-hell shooter (I’m a fan of the genre), where you choose one of 5 girls (the Xbox mode gives you the choice of an extra character) who each possess magical powers and, well, basically you shoot the crap out of anything that moves, including a giant cow, a pissed off tree, demons, pig chefs, cyclops, lizard men, dancers, dragons, and even Death itself. It’s a great game for when you feel to need to unwind with a game that doesn’t require much
thought.
Persona 4 Arena (360): I can honestly say that I have never played any game in the Persona RPG series, or even had the desire to try one, but I can never resist a 2D fighter. I’ve played this one for only about 40 minutes or so but I enjoyed it and I look forward to breaking this out on the next “nerd night”.
Dead Island (360): I kept meaning to pick this title up but just never got around to it, now that I own it, I can see why it was so popular. It’s an insanely fun and gory shooter. And there are zombies. Good times.
Neo Geo Battle Coliseum (PS2): A 2D fighter consisting of characters from Samurai Shodown, Fatal Fury and other classic Neo Geo games. Now that I own this title, I’m only 1 game away from achieving my goal of owning every 2D fighter for the Playstation 2 (Now I just need to pick up Arcana Heart).
That wraps up this month’s edition of Collector’s Corner. Listen up loyal readers; I’m always on the lookout for any “hidden gem” games to add to my collection. By that I mean any game that didn’t get media attention. If you know of any games that fit that description please let me know in the comments below.
Thanks for reading!
Currently Playing…Vol.9
First of all, I just want to apologize to all of you for letting things drop
for the last couple of months. Work and preparing for the holidays took a bigger chunk of my time than I thought it would, which led to me backing off from writing for this glorious website. Well, good news…I’m back!
<Crickets>
Hearthstone: (gasp!!) I know, I know, I feel so dirty saying it but since
Christmas I have been playing a few games every week. A little background info for you: In the spring I used to play Hearthstone on my Mac but soon became..uh..disenchanted.. with the game and decided that it just wasn’t for me. Then after playing the World of Warcraft card game, I completely deleted Hearthstone. Well for Christmas this year, my sister bought me a Kindle HDX and, well, you
can only play so much Fruit Ninja so I grudgingly downloaded the Hearthstone app. I have to say that it’s amazing how much more I like Hearthstone on a tablet. The game itself still isn’t the greatest thing in the world to me but for some reason it feels less like a waste of time when I don’t have to fire up the Mac and log in to Battlenet. I can just tap the icon and it loads right up. I’m still not a daily player and probably will never be but before the tablet I hadn’t played a game in months. I also made the game slightly more enjoyable for
myself by not playing Ranked past Rank 20, which is just enough to earn the new card backing awarded at the end of season. Anything past 20 and I’m getting smoked by people who have multiple legendaries in their decks and clearly play a ton more than I do (and I suspect spend actual money to buy packs, something I
refuse to do). At least at 20 or above when I lose the games are all close for the most part. So, yes, at the moment, I am in fact playing Hearthstone and actually kind of enjoying it.
Dragon Quest IX (DS) (yes, again.): Well I found a couple of the hidden grottos in the game, completed a few side quests, beat the snot out of some monsters, did some level-grinding and went back and fought Corvus (the last boss) again. Same result. Same. F*****. Result. Why do you mock me, RPG Gods?!?!
Diablo 3 (360): Shawn brought this one over a couple of weekends ago and we played it for hour or so and I have to say I really liked it. I hadn’t had a chance to play it before but I loved the first 2 Diablos (and their expansions) for the PC. The 3rd game doesn’t disappoint..it has all of the classic Diablo chaos and mountains of loot that we all know and love. We both picked long-range combat characters and had a pretty sound strategy for the first few quests of the game. Shawn would cast a spell that slowed down our enemies and we would pick them off even before they could get to us. Of course things were going a bit too well and the difficulty ramped up a bit and we started dying a bit more frequently but it was still fun. It’s not all rainbows and kittens though, but we’ll get into that in our 4th podcast. Despite a couple of minor issues I’m looking forward to playing this one again.

Mike Tyson ‘s Punch-Out (NES) The other night I popped this classic into my NES, not really intending to play it, but because I was working on the setup in my game room and wanted to make sure that all of my consoles were working. Right from the opening bell on the title screen I was hooked. I sat down and muttered to myself, ?Just Glass Joe, then I ‘ll get back to finishing up my project. ? Approximately 35 minutes later I was staring at my old nemesis, Soda Popinski. This guy used to absolutely beat the brakes off of me when I was a kid. Yes, that ‘s right; I ‘m ashamed to admit it but I have never beaten Punch-Out. I hated him and you better believe I hated that stupid ******* laugh of his whenever he would knock me down. With my project now completely forgotten, I eagerly pressed ?Start ? so I could show him what the 34 year old me was capable of. Right off the bat, I hit him straight in his eggplant-looking head with a couple jumping right hands, earning myself a super punch. Jumping the gun, I hit ?Start ? and wind up the super punch looking to put him and his red underoos on the mat where that punk belongs. Instead, he smashes me with a huge uppercut and a hook dropping me like a bag of crap. I rapidly hit the A+B buttons and drag myself up off of the mat. Ok, I need to regroup; if I just get the timing down I ‘ll beat him like he stole something. That ?something ? clearly being my pride. Again he goes with the same uppercut that started the knockdown sequence. This time I move to the side and proceed to smash the snot out of him, another missed uppercut leads to another snot-smashing and then it happens; he goes down. On the count of ?5 ? he starts to get up and falls back down. I ‘m going to win! I finally did it! I ‘ve won! I ‘damn, he got back up at ?8 ?. Ok. Let ‘s do this. I hit him with 2 more jumping rights and earn another super punch. He fires 3 jabs in a row and I deftly dodge them and wind up with my hard-earned super punch..and the bell rings. A barrage of expletives flies out of my mouth. ?Ok, this fight isn ‘t getting out of the 2nd round ?, I mutter. He chugs his soda and the fight is back on. I immediately jump up and hit him getting another super punch. He throws his hook and I move to the wrong side, catching it straight in the ol ‘ food hole. Ok, ok, that ‘s alri..damn, another mistimed feint and Mac is now pink as an uppercut finds its mark. Sh*t, I ‘m flustered as my timing is now completely gone which leads to me ending up on the canvas again. No big deal, it ‘s only the first knockdown of this round. I jam on the A+B buttons once again..but this time nothing happens. I ‘m out. Another string of expletives falls out of my mouth as I stare at the screen, not believing that after 25 years, I still can ‘t beat this guy. He takes the center of the ring and laughs at me as I talk myself out of launching my Nintendo controller through my new TV. Well, I was right; it didn’t get out of the 2nd round. God, I love this game.

Ninja Blade (360)-I think the only way I can accurately describe Ninja Blade is by saying that it ‘s a cross between Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry, and an action movie. The story is as follows: You play as a ninja, Ken Ogawa, who is a member of an elite special forces team that the Japanese government has called in to try and destroy an infection of Alpha worms that is slowly taking over Tokyo, turning its residents into monster worm creature things. The graphics are decent (although a little on the dark side), the controls are easy to get a hang of, and the gameplay is fun ‘when you are actually playing that is. My only complaint is that there are just way too many of those damn ?push <insert button letter here> now ? QTE (Quick Time Event) challenges. Unfortunately it ‘s a huge piece of this game. This is where the action movie comparison comes into play. After pushing one button, a scene plays out, usually followed by a prompt to quickly hit another button, which is then followed by another scene..etc. After awhile, it feels like you are not playing the game at all, you ‘re just a monkey hitting a button (hopefully) fast enough to move the movie along. If you didn ‘t hit it fast enough, or pressed the wrong one, then the scene rewinds until you actually press the correct damn button fast enough. It ‘s not like you lose a life or anything, it just rewinds. It ‘s too bad that they went so heavy on this mechanic, as the game could have been so much better than it is. That said, it ‘s still a good action/adventure game with a Devil May Cry-like combat system, neat abilities like running along walls and super speed, multiple swords to choose from, and absolutely massive bosses that will make your jaw drop. Fun (sad) fact: In 2009, Ninja Blade made Gamepro ‘s “Top 5 games that no one is playing” list.
