Between the Numbers – Grand Prix Paris 2015

Welcome to the newest addition to our article family! Between the Numbers is exactly that: numbers. Hey! I hear you yawning from here. This isn’t Trigonometry kind of numbers..this is MTG numbers. These articles will be focused on breaking down the Top 8 decks from major MTG tournaments card by card so we can see what cards saw the most action and which ones didn’t make the cut. Who knows? Lessons from the Kitchen Table: Vol.4 The Proxy Paradox

It's real..I swear.
It’s real..I swear. <cough, cough>

Yes, I’m fully aware that my cohort already wrote an opinion piece on the seedy world of MTG proxies, but I wanted to share my thoughts on the subject as well. As Shawn wrote in his article “My Case for Proxies”, he has brought up the subject of proxies to me a few times in the last couple of months. Each time I briefly thought about it before I shelved the idea thinking to myself, “What fun is that?” You see, I’m a collector at heart. My dad raised me on sports cards, which is basically one big stock market. It’s all about opening that pack or box and getting that big money card to flip for a profit. I try really hard to not see Magic that way. It’s just a game. Right? Despite that belief, I have to admit that I’ve always been remotely aware of the value of singles. I still remember standing in my local game store during the days of Gatecrash, buying 5 boosters, listening to the clerk say that he still hadn’t pulled a Boros Reckoner (which was selling for $15-$18 back then), opening one pack in front of him and pulling a Boros Reckoner out. There was a rush that I hadn’t felt since my sport card days. I’m sure you know what I’m talking about: we’ve all opened that one pack and got that rare that we were looking for.

My point is that when it comes to proxies..there is no real excitement. There is no mystery of “what’s in the pack?” And there is absolutely no monetary value. It took me looking back at my banking statements and seeing just how much I spent last year on the hobby before I decided that the rush of possibly pulling a high value single was not worth the dent my bank account was taking. Shawn had been talking about proxies for Vintage and Legacy, but I decided to take it to the next level and say that I was completely done with buying actual Magic cards and I would proxy everything. I justified it by pointing out the fact that literally Shawn is the only person I play the game with. None of my other friends have an interest in it. If I’m only playing it with one person, why spend so much? At this point, the money I save can be put towards other games that we need to report on for our podcast. The decision was made. I was out.

After talking about it with Shawn and finding a rather useful proxy site, we agreed to split the cost of a printer and would begin our adventure into the world of fake cards. I found a nice printer on sale and eagerly drove home beyond excited at the prospect of finally playing a Time Walk or a dual land. Needless to say the first batch I printed consisted of the Power 9. I took land cards and pasted the proxies over them. I took a step back to inspect my work and thought to myself that they looked good. Real good. Too good. I sent Shawn a text with a pic of my Black Lotus and a Mox Sapphire . He agreed. They looked real. He was thinking more along the lines of printing in black and white (I didn’t get that memo). I’m an artist and half the appeal of MTG is the artwork so I didn’t want to sacrifice it just because I wanted to save some money. Besides I was riding the high of every single MTG being available to me for playtesting. I quickly put together the control deck of my dreams that consisted of vintage and modern staples and printed it out.

After a couple of hours of arts n’ crafts, I had a deck. I decided to play-test it against my Modern RDW. It was like a dream..turn 1 Black Lotus, Ruby Mox and a Volcanic Island right into a Monastery Mentor. The game only lasted 4 turns. My vintage control had out-aggro’d my aggro deck. I couldn’t believe how great the deck played. Easily the most dominant deck I have. I guess that’s to be expected though. It was a rush to play..but that rush was followed by a creeping feeling of guilt. Was what I was doing okay? I had basically declared that I was going to stop supporting the game that I love. In a way I felt like I broke the game. After playing the most powerful cards you can possibly play, how can you go back to playing whatever the flavor of the month is?

I had to take a step back and start working on some modern decks with my *actual* cards to get back into the swing of things. After a couple of conversations with Shawn and a few nights of deck-building, I came to the conclusion that Proxies are *needed* in the Vintage/Legacy format. There is no place for them in Standard/Modern..for the most part the singles are cheap enough and If I really want to save money, stop buying sealed product. Stick with singles. Yes, I lose the excitement of opening a booster pack, but to me it’s worth it to not feel like I’ve broken the game. Plus, I get to scratch that collecting itch that has stuck with me throughout my life. Will I proxy Vintage? Yes. Will I feel guilty? No. There is a huge difference between creating a proxy of Mana Drain or a Mox, and a proxy of Brimaz, King of Oreskos. What’s your opinion of proxies? Let us know in the comments below. Thanks for reading!

I think we're gonna need a bigger screen..
I think we’re gonna need a bigger screen..

Thor: God of Thunder (DS) Good lord it’s a game based on a movie and it’s actually really, really fun!’ At first glance it looks like your normal run of the mill beatemup, but there are some neat elements in this game that make it stand out. You collect runes that upgrade Mjolnir (that’sThor’s mythical hammer for you comic noobs out there), your armor and your helmet. There are some of huge bosses that take up both DS screens, and the combat is pretty decent.’ My one complaint is that the enemies get very repetitious.’ You definitely get tired of seeing the same baddies over and over again. In my opinion, the good outweighs the bad though. It’s a ridiculously cheap game (only $5-$7 on eBay)and 100% worth the money.

wheroesWorld Heroes Anthology (PS2) In preparation for our next podcast, in which we will be discussing 2d fighters in general, I’ve been dusting off some older fighters in my collection and giving them another look. Well, let’s just say I now remember why I let this one collect dust.’ I actually really enjoyed the first World Heroes game for Snes, so I figured that the PS2 versions of these games must be just as good right? Wrong. The original plays fine, it’s still fun, and I still really dig the Deathmatch mode.’ That’s were the compliments end. The Anthology also consists of World Heroes 2, World Heroes Jet, and World Heroes (not so) Perfect.’ These 3 games suffer from speed issues. I think it’s the emulation that they used to port these games over, but whatever it is, it makes the rest of the games not fun at all. One fight you are flying around the screen at a breakneck pace, and the next match you are at a normal, or slightly below, speed.’ It makes the game feel unpolished in a way. I’ll still play it but only for the original World Heroes, which doesn’t suffer from the same issues as it’s successors.

Booster Break! Vol.2

It’s been a few months since we’ve done one of these booster break articles, partially due to the fact that I’ve pulled nothing noteworthy out of the boosters I have bought since the last one back in January.’ Also, we really want to start recording our booster breaks. Unfortunately,’ that didn’t happen today, but I still wanted to share the 2 Heroclix boosters that I bought with you guys.’ One Fear Itself,’ and one Amazing Spider-Man. What makes these two boosters so damn special?’ Well, today my friends, Lady Luck, instead of crapping on me, like she usually prefers to do, instead decided to smile upon yours truly.’ First up is the Fear Itself pack:

Prodigy (C)

Thule Society Priest (C)

Red She-Hulk (C)

Speedball (U)

Greithoth: Breaker of Wills (R): I love the sculpt on this guy..one of the best I’ve seen so far, and I also really like his Extreme Absorption ability. This allows him to use Impervious, Invincible, or Invulnerability for the rest of the game when he hits a character who possesses one of these powers. Too bad, he is a little too expensive to play at 200 pts.

Okay, so you’re probably shaking your head saying “Woop-dee-effin’-doo”.’ I completely agree with you; all in all a pretty underwhelming booster of Fear Itself. I was really hoping for a Kuurth, but the odds of that happening with my luck were not good.” So now, things get interesting as we move on to the Amazing Spider-Man booster:

Werewolf (C)

Daimon Hellstrom (C)

Dracula (U)

Now things get good…..

Alyosha Kraven (Prime Rare)

Spider-Man 2099 (Super Rare)

I was blown away.’ A prime and a super in the same pack?! And in the first booster of ASM that I’ve ever bought?! Hmm, maybe my luck is changing………….

…………..

………nah, probably not. What’s that saying?’ “The sun even shines on a dog’s ass occasionally”.’ Sounds about right.

Thanks for reading, and I know that I said we would have videos of our breaks before, but it’s coming, I promise.

fighter_history--article_image

Fighter’s History (SNES): Commonly referred to as Karnov’s Revenge, this game is actually nothing like the first Karnov, which was a platformer/shooter for the NES. Fighter’s History is actually a fighter (re: Street Fighter clone) that was released on the SNES and the Neo Geo. This game is probably the closest thing to Street Fighter that I have played on the Snes, although not as good as Street Fighter (duh). In fact, It’s so close that Capcom actually filed a lawsuit against Data East. Enough about that unpleasantness though. As far as fighters go this game is really decent. I usually don’t have high hopes for any fighter released during the Genesis/Snes era, with the obvious exceptions of MK, SF, Killer Instinct and Samurai Shodown, but I have to say this one is worth picking up. There are 9 fighters to choose from, and as is the case with all 2D fighters, they have their own set of special moves complete with fireballs, flying spinning kicks, jumping uppercuts..hey..wait a sec…ahem..moving on! The controls are decent, there is no lag as you pull off a special move and go straight into a combo, and the backgrounds are definitely on the same level as Street Fighter 2. I actually found that the 1 player mode is fairly easy, even on the hard setting, so there isn’t too much replay value there. Karnov is the last boss, and his moves are predictable, so once you figure the pattern out he is easy to beat down so it takes the challenge out of the game a bit. I think the replay value lies within the Vs mode where you and a buddy can beat the bajeezus out of each other. Of course that value is limited as there are only 9 characters but still it’s worth the money as this game only goes for around $10 on eBay. Helpful hint: the speed can feel a little slow, especially when compared to today’s fighters, but go to the options menu and change the speed to fast and the game flows much better.

Monored Blitz

fsatyr

In order to counter Shawn’s RDW, which can be seen here, I thought it would be in my best interest to create my own version of RDW (fight fire with fire you might say…get it? Because it’s red deck vs re…<clears throat>…). Having played against another one of Shawn’s aggro decks in the past, I know better than to try to play a midrange or control deck as it usually ends up…not good..for me. Unfortunately, this deck that I’m about to share with all of you didn’t end up being Standard-legal. The bad news is that probably means an ass-kicking on Saturday night if I don’t come up with something else between now and then. The good news is that I created something really, really decent (in Legacy). There are no massive creatures in this deck, just a horde of 1 to 3 drop creatures powered by pump and burn spells.

Strengths:

Insanely fast with tons of combos. I’ve been able to consistently pull off having a Guttersnipe, Young Pyromancer and a Kiln Fiend or two on the board, then playing an instant, sorcery, or both. Good times.

Weaknesses:

Mass removal spells. Any opponent that isn’t dead within the first 5 or 6 turns. Midrange this deck ain’t.

The Deck (60 cards):

Creatures (28)

4x Kiln Fiend

2x Firedrinker Satyr

1x Vexing Devil

2x Zurgo Bellstriker

3x Guttersnipe

2x Minotaur Skullcleaver

1x Firefist Striker

1x Valley Dasher

1x Prophetic Flamespeaker

2x Young Pyromancer

1x Monastery Swiftspear

2x Satyr Hoplite

Spells (14)

1x Rouse the Mob

2x Flame Slash

3x Magma Spray

2x Dynacharge

1x Roast

3x Titan’s Strength

1x Shock

1x Trumpet Blast

Lands (18):

18x Mountains

Jeskai Heroic on a Budget

mantis

Here is another standard deck (well, Standard as of 4/15) that I’ve been fine-tuning over the last few days. The title says it all..it’s a R/W/U heroic deck..no insanely valuable cards, no smothering control, no crazy life-gain, just pump your creatures up and go to town. Note: I’m going back to my original deck list format where I give you some strengths and some weaknesses (because no deck is perfect).

Strengths:

Lots of synergy in this deck. It seems like almost everything that you play ends up pumping your little critters up. If your opponent doesn’t start removing your guys, then things can get ugly quick. I included some Mantis Riders and a Prognostic Sphinx to get your opponent’s attention and a Monastery Siege to keep your opponent from burning your Heroic creatures.

Weaknesses:

You can get out-aggro’d. Is that a word? It is now. A couple of burn spells and you may find yourself spinning your tires trying to get some creatures pumped up. To sum it up: Anger of the Gods is not your friend.

The Deck: (60 cards)

The Creatures:

2x Phalanx Leader

2x Wingsteed Rider

2x Favored Hoplite

1x Fabled Hero

1x Seeker of the Way

1x Jeskai Student

4x Battlewise Hoplite

3x Mantis Rider

1x Prognostic Sphinx

2x Lagonna-Band Trailblazer

2x Sunscorch Regent

1x Dawnbringer Charioteers

1x Battlefield Thaumaturge

The Spells:

2x Feat of Resistance

2x Dauntless Onslaught

1x Citadel Siege

1x Monastery Siege

2x Jeskai Ascendancy

2x Jeskai Charm

2x Battlewise Valor

1x Kill Shot

2x Ordeal of Heliod

1x Trumpet Blast

1x Ajani’s Presence

2x Defiant Strike

1x Icy Blast

1x Crater’s Claws

Artifacts:

1x Spear of Heliod

Lands:

4x Mystic Monastery

2x Wind-Scarred Crag

2x Swiftwater Cliffs

2x Tranquil Cove

5x Plains

4x Islands

2x Mountains

Currently Playing…

legomarvel

Lego Marvel Superheroes (360): Yup. A Lego game. After our last podcast, we decided to do a comic book theme for our next show which will be recorded on April 11th. To stick to the theme Shawn thought it would be a good idea to do a segment on the Lego superhero titles. I told him that it was a great idea BUT I have never played a Lego Batman or Marvel game. Long story..uh..shorter…I picked up a copy of Marvel Superheroes at Best Buy because it was on sale (I’m cheap, what can I say?). I popped the disc in with a sigh, not really expecting all that much. I mean it’s a damn Lego game, these things are meant for kids…right? Wrong. The game is insanely fun..I expected a mindless PG rated beat’em up, but instead I found myself playing a really good puzzle game with some beat’em up segments sprinkled in. Honestly, this is the kind of game that you would want your kids to play. It tests your critical thinking skills, it’s entertaining as hell, and it’s not over-the-top violent. Despite the lack of violence and the fact that these are little Lego characters running around solving puzzles, this game can be enjoyed by gamers of all ages. I highly recommend this one.

<I refuse to insert a picture of the next game>

Afro Samurai (360): Okay, we go from a great, well-designed game, to a steaming pile of dog sh*t cooking in the hot summer sun. I really liked the Afro Samurai anime series, so I thought the game must be, at the very least, playable. Can’t win them all I guess. If I had to choose one word to best describe this game it would be repetitious. You run around hacking the crap out of a bunch of Japanese guys. That’s it. The voice acting is decent, (hot damn! A compliment!), but wears thin after awhile..(aaaaand compliment retracted). Between the wacky camera angles, the boring combat system, and fighting what looks like the same enemies over and over, this game isn’t worth the 5 bucks I paid for it.

Life-Gain Beatdown (Legacy)

dopI know what you are saying right now: “C’mon, a cheesy life-gain deck?!” Well don’t pass judgement..I haven’t steered you wrong yet have I? This isn’t just any life-gain deck my friends. No, this deck isn’t about building up a mountain of life points that you sit on and giggle as your opponent struggles to even put a scratch in it. The life points we get go towards a great cause: pumping up our Divinity of the Pride, Serra Avatar and we can also sacrifice that stockpile to feed some Moltensteel Dragons. In order to get life fast this deck contains one key card: Rhox Faithmender (well two copies actually). His ability to double the amount of life you gain allows you to pump up the creatures mentioned above at an insanely fast rate. Who doesn’t want to play an 8/8 flying Divinity of the Pride on Turn 5? Of course to keep that life total nice and high, you need to shut down your opponent’s offense. To do so, the deck contains Angel of Serenity, Pacifism, and a playset of Banisher Priest. This deck is pretty fun to play but your opponent probably won’t agree. Now on to the list:

The Deck(60 cards)

Creatures (25): Enchantments(7):

4x Banisher Priest 2x Ordeal of Heliod

2x Divinity of the Pride 2x Pacifism

4x Kemba’s Skyguard 2x Brave the Elements

1x Archon of Redemption 1x Divine Favor

2x Rhox Faithmender Artifacts(1):

1x Serra Avatar 1x Hall of Triumph

1x Augury Adept Instants(7):

1x Angelic Skirmisher 4x Rest for the Weary

1x Angel of Serenity 2x Riot Control

1x Watcher of the Roost 1x Phalanx Formation

2x Doomed Traveler Lands(18):

1x Seraph of the Sword 17x Plains

1x Seraph of Dawn 1x Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx

1x Suture Priest

2x Ajani’s Sunstriker

Artifact Creatures(2):

2x Moltensteel Dragon

Note: If you want to be a real dweeb and add in another possible win condition..grab a copy or two of Felidar Sovereign, which allows you to win the game if you have 40 or more life at your upkeep. I’m not into it, but hey whatever floats your boat.
